not all USB keys created equally?
 

i have 3 USB sticks, 2 of them, formated and scanned and fixed and with only songs on them don't register with my Scion FRS

the one one, with not only music but a bunch of other crap that i haven't cleaned up in awhile reads perfectly.

Fat32 or Fat16. The other two are probably NTFS or some other (ext3, riser,etc) file system.

or their could be a size limit.

There shouldn't be a size limit, I have a 64gb drive and it works fine. File System can use NTFS, FAT32, or EXT4 without problems. I've been able to get them to work.

I have two of those MiniSD to USB converters. The same MiniSD formatted in FAT32 works with one of them, but doesn't get recognized in the other. They both work on any other USB device I plug them into.

Go figure.

Not all USB drives are created equal. Some use different chips that the BeSpoke will not recognize according to the manual.

I was able to get my 16GB Rocketfish flash drive recognized after formatting from NTFS to FAT32.

Now, I'm looking for the highest capacity flash drive that is mirco form factor so it doesn't stick out so much. I'd hate to bump into it while shifting and break it or worse, damage the USB port.

Have you been able to address more than 256 folders in any of those (in a subdirectory, I am aware of the root limitation with FAT).

I'm using long filenames so wondering if that's the issue.

Has anyone been able to address over 256 folders using the Stereo's USB reader? Thanks.

Why would anyone need 256 cascading folders (sub directories)?
That just becomes an organizational disaster.

Files, there's no file limitation per folder, but To answer your question, no -- I have not gotten past that since i have no need for 255 subdirectories.

Also I think I'm not affected any more since my headunit has been swapped.

I'm using the same with a 16GB microSD. Don't know why, but it's spotty on recognizing it. Generally, it works if it's plugged in when I start the car, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it takes minutes to recognize it . . .

I have it formatted in FAT32, there are an awful lot of subfolders (artist/album) on there, as well as old android backups I'm ready to delete. I just don't know why sometimes it works and others it's unavailable.

Either way though, it's light years ahead of the media center USB/bluetooth hub on my 2011 Outback; that thing is a royal pain in the ass. Half the time the bluetooth link is in mono until I disconnect and reconnect on my phone. :barf:

There must be a limit as I'm running into one.
255 folder limitation, not nested, flat, directory level deep only.

e.g. folder setup, each folder having a typical number of tracks in each (but with long filenames in some cases)

/ - addressable by the player
/music - adddressable by the player
/music/album1 - addressable by the player
....
/music/album255 - addressable by the player
/music/album256 - not addressable by the player

interesting.. it may be a player limitation not just a file ssystem constraint.

So small it's hard to remove.

I guess I still don't see a reason why we would need an organizational method/paradigm that would cause us to use 256+ subfolders. Only thing is if you really want to just listen to music per album. Though you'd be spending too much time skipping songs per album to find the one you want to listen.

It would definitely be a limitation of the headunit and not your platform.

You'd be suprised. I've gone over my 32GB several times over, and I do have more than 256 albums.. :)

just got my GT 86 today. put in my 16GB sandisk pendrive with 5.86gb worth of audio, my player struggle to play the files. it was formatted to NTFS. Then i try to reformatted to exFAT now i can listen to some music. hope that helps

There is most definitely a limit. I have mine organized thusly:

Music\Genre\artist - album - track# - song title.mp3

In folders that have more than 256 songs, it only loads the first 255. Basically this is every single folder, since each genre folder has more than 1k songs in it.

What's even more frustrating here is that it's not even the first 255 songs in the directory. Only one of my Foo Fighters album show up, and it's not the first, nor the last in the list. And the Wolfmother album shows up, while a slew of albums that should be alphabetically sorted earlier aren't there.

I don't understand it, but it definitely seems a limitation of the BRZ Nav unit.

This wouldn't be an issue, to be honest, but it seems like the "Random -> Folder" option doesn't play sub-folders. And if a folder only has sub-folders, you can't select that folder for "Random" - there has to be a song in it.

*THIS* is why I want an iOS/Android type player for the car. :mad0259:
