Interesting poll and pretty simple to understand. It will be telling. I'm sure there could be a combination of these factors but the primary reason speaks well.

Function is my primary factor. I need to buy a laptop so I can flash my ECU.....

Reputation/history. You should consider adding that option to your poal.

As an end user on the FRS my choice was simple - ECUTek offered all 3.

For an older car with less integration of the ECU into it...like say a MR2, I always recommend to find a tuner first and go with what they have experience with. The best ECU in the world can suck if you can't find a tuner.

@ATSAaron, I wasn't aware you were on this forum or had an FRS. Welcome!

function and capabilities is a key factor for me as well. I have to agree with orbital though and say that reputation can play a key role in making a decision as well. Reputation of the product itself and of the tuner themselves.

To me, it really depends on all 3. I've bought many a standalone in my day and having one that does everything including cook your breakfast is great, but they are usually VASTLY overpriced. My favorites have been Hydra and PowerFC for their attractive pricing to performance ratio.

My answer would be the one that is not a piggy back.

Presuming we're not talking about off-the-shelf flashes, I'd want something that I can tune myself, or pay someone else to tune for me with reasonable licensing terms in which I own the work I paid for. In other words, not ecutek lol.

If I never plan on changing the car post-tune and just want some reliable power with no effort, I'd probably go for ecutek. They have some great 'bonus' features.

Great feedback. Thanks!
