temporary metal protection

So I’ve scraped my rear quarter panel down to the bare metal in an underground parking garage. Bent the thing pretty badly too.

I’m probably looking at around 1500-2000 to fix it properly so I’m weighing my options of whether to do it cash or go through insurance. My insurance is up for renewal in a month so I wanted to avoid filing a claim until after the renewal cycle (that way they don’t ding me until next year, if at all.. I think? Haha)

In the meantime, is there anything I can apply on to the open metal to prevent corrosion until I get it fixed? I have some rust check spray that I bought awhile ago for other metal work, would that work for the time being?

you could spray primer on it.

don't bother. unless you plan on leaving it as is for quite some time it wont rust anywhere near enough to worry about. the whole repair area will be ground clean anyway and surface rust is not an issue when doing that. and file a claim, that's what insurance is for. you wouldn't believe the number of customers we get that are afraid to make a claim and pay out of pocket for repairs.

i know, but i would rather pay 2 grand now than 5 grand over the next 10 years or whatever.

i need to call them first

here in Canada insurance companies own you pretty badly for the slightest fuckups.
