Thunderhill (bypass) w/ GDS 4/9/2013

Had so much fun again! Was a fantastic day of 70 deg F and sun shine!

The new brakes were awesome but took me a while to get used to the new feel/bite. Carbotech XP10/XP8. It was fun braking super late in the turns this time vs. stock pads.

I also was able to dial in some delicious oversteer by adjusting tire pressures. Now I know why more experienced drivers love a little twitchiness in the rear. I love being able to rotate the car with throttle input mid corner when needed. I was smiling a lot :).

Managed 1 and a half sec better times than last time I was at THill (recorded times). The last session had much less traffic and I got lots of clean laps but it really sucks my laptimer decided to fail and not record anything that session...

Here is a 2:11 lap:

Nice one! This isn't with NCRC is it? Their April 27 sched is full for solo, I'm on the waitlist, hoping to get in ;-)

EXCELLENT driving......your line onto the back straight (T11) is much better....using 2nd gear there really gives you a BOOST down the brack straight!!!

2:11 is a VERY good time for you and your car....remember the FR-S full race on R comps that ran the 25 hour on turned a 2:07.8 or something.....tires alone will make up that much....... Also it sounded like you had a passenger? Thats a second by itself too

I am glad you got the car more neutral....it seemed a bit on the "tight" side before....you really can tell when you are in the zone with the car when little slight corrections with throttle and-or steering can place the tail where you want it!!!!

Wear out these tires......then make a jump to a streetish Dot R...something like Toyo RA1 or R888 will drop a couple seconds EASY....a true R comp like Toyo RR or Hoosier R6 will drop another second from that....

What tire pressures (cold and hot) were you running, front and rear? What tires are you on?

245 RS3's
RCE yellows (No one says it does this but these springs gave my car a tendency to push at the limit which is why I have my pressures setup like below)
**Also the yellows gave my rear -2 camber and I was only able to get about -1.3 camber front. This could explain the pushing**

Cold pressures:

30 psi front
35 psi rear

Hot pressures:

34 psi front
39 psi rear

Yes I had a passenger (skinny 120 lb passenger). At my skill level (intermediate) I am not seeing a difference with or without a passenger. Maybe when I get better!

I still feel there is a second or two left on the table with my skill level and this set up. The last few seconds are hard to get!!!!

I am a bit curious about those tires you mentioned. Wonder what they feel like out there. First I want to dial in my camber properly. Robie's control arms or camber plates are my next mod.

Added a video where I did a lead follow with a Blue BRZ guy that was there. Nice guy! Hope I see him again at one of these events!

How did u spin out? Oil or fluid on the track?

Jeff, you've never run the bypass yet. You've got to hit it right or you can easily spin at that turn. I love running the bypass. Fun.

Had no problems with it all day. I was even going the same speed through there as I usually do. Nothing majorly different.

If you pay close attention to the right side of the course, you will see two tire tracks of sand/dirt. I believe that is what unsettled the rear.

I see I see, ya i kept watching the video and couldnt really figure out why SW20kosh spun out, no excessive speed or over steer, hence im suspecting debris on the track like fluid, oil, or sand like what he said.

Thill April 19th (spyder), Sonoma May24th (BRZ), Thill June 29th (BRZ)

your spin seems odd......not in the usual spot where people loose it on the bypass....the "typical" problem is people go off the 2nd larger bump with the wheel turned....and when the car lands, the wheels are still turned and now the compression loads the tires and boom your around...

You were well past that point....I would guess you hit a bit of oil or something..... Oil is SCARY......

quick story.....I was chasing a friend in a C6 Z06 a couple years ago in my 928 lemons racer (ran 2:06 over the top) we were moving.....take T3 like always...then all of a sudden the car starts understeering heavily to the outside of the track, steering wheel got light and felt funny....I slowly took steering angle out as I am drifting towards the dirt.....gain traction right at the edge of the track and drive off under control......found a lotus elise in the dirt right in front of me....turns out a Honda blew its engine right on the apex of T3.....I only hit the oil with my inside tires....which overloaded the outside ones....hence the understeer.....
