factor paint defect, should i repair it or leave it alone?
 

just got good and bad news at the same time. good news, the trucker is picking up my car from the CO dealership i bought it from. the bad news is that he found what the dealership couldn't, a blemish that everyone there believes to be a factory paint defect as its under the clear coat.

they said i could keep the car there and have them repaint it or take delivery and have me go to a local dealership to perform the repaint IF subaru approves of it. since it's a small defect, i just said ship it! i can't wait for my car :) but this makes me a bit sad though.

anyways, the picture is below. the blemish is on the right fender behind the headlight. if they fix it, they'll probably have to do the whole fender right? if so, i might not want to mess with that.

That, I would get fixed. That would bug me.

what is the price to have it repaint?

i'm being told it should be covered by subaru since it's a factory defect.

i'm waiting until it comes in to make a decision. just worried if work is done on it, it'll create more problems.

I know it's a small imperfection, but I wouldn't take that car. No way in hell do I want the fender painted on a brand new car.

Hey man.. personally, I would just take it. It really is not a big deal. You are going to get paint chips on the front end just from freeway driving. I used to live in OC (doing a shit load of freeway driving) and I battled paint chips (on a different ride) for a while but then just gave up and lived with it. I have about 5000 miles on my Hot Lava FR-S and I have at least a half dozen paint chips on my front end (including one on the very edge of my hood). This defect will not matter once you get wear on the rest of the car. Just my opinion. :)

Btw.. if you keep it, *don't* have them repaint it. Not worth it at this stage. Repaint (bumpers, panels, etc) will come later after a few years.. always does.

I agree with Burrcold, the car needs to be crushed down, total writeoff.

Otherwise somebody might try and sand down the edge of that panel and...dare I say this...touch it up.

Take it. Learn to love the defect, you have a unique FR-S now.

U sure that's under the clear coat? Almost looks like a sloppy job with a touch up brush

i ended up taking the car as it was an on the spot decision. i didn't want to wait another week. one month was enough haha

THEY say it's under the clearcoat, "they" being the sales person, their "paint specialist", and the transporter. It's smooth when you swipe over it.

either way, i don't think it'll bother me much since the way i park i never see the passenger side and the defect is pretty small. i'm gonna keep it. want to avoid the dealership as much as i can.

That can happen when you don't clean the nozzles or the equipment properly.
I wouldn't sweat it. Every new car that I've had, I've always spotted some skinned paint contamination, albeit much smaller.

Not worth trying to touch it up since the repair will be softer than the factory finish and that color can be hard to match. Around here, the dealers use a local contractor that can do spot repairs pretty well. A better alternative to what a body shop would do, and that's usually an entire panel and blending into adjacent ones.
