Can the transmission crush washers be reused?
thinking about changing my fluid this weekend wasn't sure if the dealers have them in stock or are they a standard size?
|
Should be able to reuse it no problem. I know I did.
|
My rule of thumb is, first time you take it off you should be able to reuse, second time you should replace it but still reusable if you cant get a hand on one and then third time change it ASAP. And yes the dealer does carry washers.
|
Probably, but just get a new one.
Dealers will stock them and they aren't be that expensive. |
If you read this post you'll see that whereas the diff seems to have crush washers, the tranny has flat washers to begin with and can/should be re-used. In a pinch, I wouldn't hesitate to re-use a crush washer (but perhaps turn it around before installing).
True story, one of the "quick lube" places installed one crush washer right on top of another once on my oil drain plug. No oil leaked but I was pissed when I discovered this. I swear I'm never letting those clowns touch my car ever again. |
Make sure both surfaces are really clean (should be with a new car) before reusing it. Personally I prefer not to. My peace of mind is worth more than $3

The flat washers can be found at places like belmetric.com or mcmaster.com for about a dollar per washer or less. The crush washers used for the diff are probably more leak-proof because of the service interval, although I really have no idea. I don't think there's anything wrong with using a flat washer there as well.

It's more than highly recommend to ALWAYS change out washer's or crush sleeves any time they have been in between services. none of them from factory were intended to be reused.

I always change it. Saving $1-2 isn't worth a possible leak that might ruin the engine, trans or diff which would end up costing thousands. For the trans/diff they are more expensive for the washers but you change those fluids out less then the engine oil
