Wheel lock on only one per wheel: unbalanced?

Is the weight difference of only putting one wheel lock on 1 wheel negligible or does it cause a problem like using a lab centrifuge without balancing the test tubes in it?

Would it be the cause of camber wear?

You should be using 5 per wheel for maximum security and theft deterrence.

no, man lol. they wouldn't sell 1 per wheel wheel locks if it was bad for the car in any way. that being said, 5 per wheel is more protective and will generally look better. i also prefer not to have the keyed ones as they could wear away over time.

edit for clarity:
i prefer these:

not these:

I dont really live in a high crime area but I was wondering if it causes some unbalance at high speeds. Yea, I have those ghetto ones in the bottom pic.

nah you won't have any problems with balance. and they're not ghetto, they're perfectly fine. just if they're overtorqued constantly with like an air impact gun, you'll start to see the ridges fade. but yea if the balance thing really bothers you (and i'm 100% sure you won't have a balance issue using 1 wheel lock per wheel) then just get 5 wheel locks per wheel if you want.

I'm sure they are very close in weight, if not exactly the same. In addition they very close to the center of rotation where a minor imbalance has far less effect then it would close to the outer edge of the wheel.

As long as you are not mix matching aluminum locks with the stock ones then you should be fine. Lighter is always better though so when in doubt go get a full 20pc set aluminum from ebay.

I have set of the original Subaru wheel locks (with key) as shown in the lower photo (one lock per wheel) for 15 bucks including shipping to continental U.S. (the lower 48 only).

try and not create imbalance

Camber wear is caused by a bad camber setting for how you drive, nothing else.

The further out from the center of the wheel that you find a difference in weight the stronger the effect will be. The difference here in weight is so slight and so close to the center of the wheel (axle) that there will not be any effect on balance.

Huehuecoyotl 03-24-2013 10:27 AM

Uh I can 'feel' a lock missing, so its not that slight!

Exactly. It's at the hub so it's effect is minute.
