Anyone else run Linux?
 

Any kind of Linux-based operating system (which doesn't include MacOS. That's Unix based. Not a HUGE difference, but..)..?
I prefer Ubuntu for daily use... it gives me something to tinker with. When I want to play games, I boot up Windoze 7.
I'm probably alone on this one, but.. I love my Linux. If it could play windows games seamlessly, I'd never ever use windows.

I use a General Electric programmed Linux OS on my CT machine at work.The guy who services the machine told me it's based off the Redhat Distro.

From what I've been told by family members who work in network administration and stuff like that (I have alot of family memebrs in that field), Redhat is the leading distro in the industry.

Quite possibly, but Ubuntu's trying real hard to give it a run for its money.
Ubuntu's whole gameplan is to make it real easy... kind of... soften the learning curve at the first step.

If you've ever used an Android phone, you've BASICALLY used linux, actually... but I'm not sure how much "Linux" is in that OS. It might be that they've just used the kernel, left everything else out, but it might be that they also used many GNU programs generally associated with Linux-based operating systems..

The thing I love about Linux is that you can play with it. It can do basically anything and look any way you like.. Where windows always has one start bar at the bottom, and almost requires a Ph.D. to modify the UI, most Linux distros have this functionality almost built-in, along with the rock-solid nature of it.. it's great.

I use to have it on my old laptop but now I have it as a google chrome OS beta

Ubuntu 9.04/ Windows 7 dual boot.

Don't use Ubuntu much these days.

+1 on the GE CT, I don't really screw with the software side more so electronics of it, but it would be fun to learn.

Oh and i run Android on my A885:wub:. Best mobile OS i have ever used.

Used to use Ubuntu and Redhat all the time (Home/Work) but recently I've fallen out of the mood to tinker with an OS to get it to do what I want.

Also if you want to run games on Linux there are a couple companies out there that give you more powerful and tinkered versions of Wine X to get up and running. Used to run WoW, HL, TFC, CS off of it. New games and lesser played games don't really get much love though and I often grew weary of the hours I would spend getting these games to run in a Linux environment, only to find out that they crap out at the end of Stage 1.

Yes, that's kind of the flipside of the coin on linux..
You can tinker with it all you want, but.. you HAVE to tinker with it much of the time.

well I'm in no way knocking Ubuntu. I've tried Ubuntu myself and find it very powerful. What I meant by Redhat being the best in the industry, the industry meaning the professional environment like network security/monitoring and crap like that. Ubuntu I'd say is the ideal choice for home and personal use.

I've done major appearance modifications on windows based OSes before, it's not too hard, just alot of things that Microsoft puts in that you have to bypass. Linux is much easier at customizing your desktop with their choice of GNOME and KDE and stuff.

What always bugged me about windows is that you have to fight it every step of the way.
Linux is like "o?! New mods?! Gimme gimme!"

I've been running Linux for a while now. 2 years I think, I started with ubuntu 8.04 and am using Ubuntu 9.10 right now. I've used a ton of distros but Fedora and Ubuntu are my favorite. Arch and Gentoo were pretty cool too but got annoying. Ubuntu seems to "just work" but the big plus is the forums.

Have you tried running games under wine? I've been successful running C&C generals and a few of my friends are running WOW under ubuntu.

Yeah, the only reason I played WoW was to see if I could get it running under Linux.. played a couple private servers (because I wouldn't actually pay for it..) and quit.
I've been playing Aion. Probably gonna try and get that running under WINE pretty soon.

I haven't messed around with Wine much simply because I don't play PC games and because I thought I would try FOSS alternatives. Although the best use I've had for it was for the network validation tool at my university. (They only support Windows and Mac).

Unfortunately my old hp laptop won't recieve a decent OS because Wine won't run on AMD so its internet access is denied. I knew I shoulda went to MIT. lol
