Does the A/C cut off upon hard acceleration?

I'm still breaking the car in so no redline yet.

Yes, it does for me. I assume it is normal

Not mine. But I do get the rhythmic AC chirp though but I really don't mind it (engine chirp is louder )

continuecrushing 03-22-2013 03:45 AM

Hmm, haven't tested it yet. In for more results

Brzetto 03-22-2013 04:26 AM

Whoa! I guess I will find out once I pass 1000 miles. I always turn off the a/c when I have to accelerate hard in my other car.

Sigh-on-Rice 03-22-2013 05:41 AM

I believe it does. It smells like as if I turned off the A/C while I leave the fan running.

Evil86 03-22-2013 09:48 AM

It drops power to the compressor (no cold air), but it still sucks power) according to the butt dyno.

brillo 03-22-2013 10:37 AM

My RX8 did this to both give you more power and protect the compressor as the engine had such a high redline.

sevi21 03-22-2013 10:43 AM

pfft never had to use the ac out her since i bought her on october 1st lol

RWD-boxer 03-22-2013 11:58 AM

Yes mine dose and the bad smell from the vent will go away after about 10k

Sportsguy83 03-22-2013 12:12 PM

Every modern car (see around 2000+) that wants to help conserve the life of the compressor does this. It disengages the clutch at certain high RPM's to prolong its life. :)

Funny thing, my friend used to work in Subaru and he noted that the "bad smell" is actually how a typical Subaru A/C smells like :). Definitely shows where our cars came from.

Also, yes, the compressor will turn off at high engine revs. That is also typical of the Impreza STI :)

Yes it does, all modern cars disengage the AC compressor under decent acceleration to save fuel as well as help the car wring more power from the engine when needed. In the case of decently high-revving cars like the FRS, it does so to save the compressor from over-spinning as well.

The LS1 will disengage the ac at 4,000 rpms
