Crazy idea... the Rear Seat info ?

I know many of the people probably wont ever
use their back seats... heck I rarely have people
ride in my back seat as it is ...

but at times I do need seating space for 4 ..
and myself being Asian and most of my friends too
I have a feeling I can fit people into the back seats
of this 2+2 sports car ... but the question is ..
HOW much room will there be left...

So if anyone here can help post a picture of ...
who knows a 6 feet tall average size fellow from
the Good-o-US-of-A ... then I will have a reassuring
feeling that I won't have anything to worry about.
:w00t:

SUB-FT86 01-07-2012 10:31 AM

You have to view this car as a 2 seater only even though it has rear seats. Otherwise you will be disappointed.

Fox 01-07-2012 10:32 AM

yeah, iŽd love to see a picture with a person sitting in the back to get a impression! Its the same for me, sometimes its good to have 4 seats, just for a short trip. Thats why i wont buy the z4 coupe or 370z

From pictures i think its got more room than the audi tt, i think you can compare it to the celica t23, so "normal" people have to keep their head in a non-comfortable position :D

Want.FR-S 01-07-2012 11:32 AM

If both the front pessengers are 6' with long legs (ie extend their seats further back) there could be less or no leg room for the back seat. However, the drawing at the service manual indicates that you could fit 4 people when you position the seats properly.

That said, the size of this car is quite similar to the last gen of celica (2000+). So the back seats should be functional.

tripjammer 01-07-2012 11:37 AM

Next week somebody sit in the back seat and take a picture. Somebody big and somebody small.

yayforaddison 01-07-2012 03:30 PM

We have been wondering for a while. Next week I'll be at the show, and if someone hasn't already posted a picture Saturday morning, I'll hop in the back seat, and post a picture from my iPhone that morning.

I'm 6'1" btw.

Caliban 01-07-2012 03:35 PM

gauging from the pix from TAS, both BRZ and FRS have very little room the in the rear. So regardless of your size, it will be very uncomfortable trying to sit in the back for long drives. I highly suspect the rear seats were implemented for insurance purposes..

miata 01-07-2012 03:46 PM

In 1995 when I had the eclipse GST I had no problem carrying friends in the backseat. I don't think FRS will be smaller than the 1995 Eclipse.

You can't compare a transversely mounted FWD in terms of interior space to the FR-S/BRZ as the drivetrain layout allows for more cabin space in those FWDs.

Russduck 01-07-2012 06:42 PM

"Car" magazine from Britain suggested the back seat was for double amputees only.

If you look at some of the early comparison shots at this forum back in 2010, you can see the cabin space for a celiac is very close to the one for the mk I concept, regardless of how the drive train layout is.

Your statement would be true if both cars in comparison have the same wheel base then the fwd could have more room for interior. However, I don't think the cars mentioned here have the same wheel space so your point is not valid here.

I would say magazine writer exaggerate a bit to get your attention. There was a picture in tms where 4 Japanese young people sit in this car for picture.

Hopefully some will verify this in Detroit this time .

Pls also take a pic of the leg room in the back with the driver's seat adjusted for your height. Thx

MrVito 01-07-2012 07:10 PM

I suspect it will be about as functional as teh back seat in a 240SX, fine for 2 children, or one adult turned sideways :)

We are pretty much the same height, 6'2 here. If you can get a pic of you in the drivers seat with the seat all the way back and down with the steering wheel tilted and telescoped as far as it will go, that would be great! Trying to see if there will be enough room for me without knees hitting the steering wheel. :)

nrclptcnsmniak 01-07-2012 08:04 PM

Search. There's a photo already of some people sitting in the back

yayforaddison 01-07-2012 08:37 PM

I'm probably going sit in the front seat and have my buddy in the back seat (who is 6'). I usually put car seats all the way down and telescope the wheel about half way out. But I will also take a picture of the back seats with the fronts all the way back for you extra tall people, and the ones who like to barley reach the pedals :slap:

I'll take tons of pictures, but I know how everyone is curious about the back seats so I'll get a few good ones back there!

yayforaddison 01-07-2012 08:38 PM

Didn't mean to put that thumbs down ^^^ lolol

Yeah there was that pic of the 4 but I don't remember the back two being that comfortable.

Longhorn248 01-07-2012 10:56 PM

I remember the pic, and tried to search for it, but couldn't find it. I guess the forum doesn't have the "search by picture" feature up yet. It looked a little cramped in the back even with smaller guys. I wouldn't expect the back seat to be very usable past anything but a short trip.

I found it. I am on my mobile device so can't embed the pic. Here is the thread with the pic. Hachi should just hire me to be the website search engine/search for duplicate threads. Lol

Preferably ask one of the models to sit in the car.

And they could solve that thread question of whether there is enough room to have sex in the car.

I am waiting on such information. I'm a tall lad of 6'6"... I wasn't anticipating such information. I was just going to wait till' the Scion dealer got one in to see for myself.

BootpTraphik 01-08-2012 01:04 AM

Coming from the owner of a dimensionally larger RWD coupe, ain't no one gonna fit in the back of the 86, comfortably at least.

Sure Toyota will SAY you can fit 4 adults in the 86, just like Hyundai said you could fit four adults comfortable in the back of the GenCoupe. In reality, no one taller than 5'4" can fit in my back seat without risk of permanent neck/head trauma. I am 5'8" and I have to angle/tilt/lean forward to avoid resting my head against the rear window. I sit in the back seat while cleaning the interior just to humour myself.

Oh yeah, the seats will be comfortable and shapely, but headroom real estate is very limited in small RWD coupes (not talking hatches here, plenty of room in the back of GTi's). Basically, the rear seat is for insurance and storage.

borge12 01-08-2012 01:32 AM

The one thing I'm concerned about is a rear facing car seat. I've read that front-facing car seats will fit without a problem, but I think I'm going to need a rear-facing within the next couple of years, and without it fitting there may be problems.

Models' legs are too long. they won't fit in the back.

MRZ415 01-08-2012 03:06 AM

After seeing that nori yaro picture iam sure i will fit myself and friends inside..
myself being 5 feet 7 and all... but to the typical american it will be a 2 seater with
baby seats..

I fit 4 of my buddies (all males*) in the back of a gencoupe. For no more than a couple miles though. I found it hilarious as I was driving. Somewhat carefully.

*For clarification that they are at least around average sized adults, not anything suspect.

:bs: He looks 5'6" maybe 5'7" optimistically speaking. Anyone over 6'2" won't be happy in the driver's seat.

Yes you need to worry about rear facing baby seat. The best location to fit the rear facing coarser is the middle position of the rear seat of a *4 door sedan* or any of the large mini van or SUV. In a small car like 86, this could post a challenge.

However, I think you can still do it if you move the front passenger seat to the front and you should have enough space. But the to carry another adult/child is somewhat limited.

All in all, this is all based on if they install the LATCH system at the back seat. If not, things get complicated.

duffman13 01-08-2012 12:44 PM

I have an RSX-S and think that the rears will be about the same as my car.

i.e. you can fit forward facing child seats, kids will fit fine, but anybody over 5'6 probably doesn't want to be in there for more than 30 minutes

You must be smoking. When I push my seats all the way back there is still leg room in my RSX for rear passengers. You need to look at the inside pics of the FRS.

iff2mastamatt 01-08-2012 02:12 PM

I'm not sure about other states, but in NJ it's legal to ride in any seat behind the front seats without a seatbelt (if you're 18 yo+). Aside from a lousy rear ceiling height, maybe one person can sit "more" comfortably with extra legroom?

I would never ride in a car without a seatbelt. Don't care if you are in a huge Hummer. Just not worth the risk in event of an accident. I have seen so many accidents with un-restrained drivers/passengers. Just not worth it. Not to mention the 75% mortality rate for those ejected from a car in a accident.
