Yes to better mpg. No to the manual XT. CVT trans only. We love our manual trans '07 Forester XT, would consider trading up to a new one if a manual was available in the XT.

The FA20 DIT (Direct Injection Turbo) was already available on the JDM Legacy with 296HP and 295ft-lbs.

I read an article about the forester, I believe it was in motor trend, and they said the turbo'd setup was "borrowed" from the 2014 BRZ. I find that interesting because its directly contradictory from the information that Subaru has been releasing about the possibilities of a TC BRZ.

The engine was used in the JDM Legacy first, and was released about the same time the BRZ was available. Like others said, it's similar to the FA20 in the BRZ but has Subaru's own DI system and not the D4S found on the BRZ FA20.

Very torquey motor but I don't know if it's something you would really want in a RWD sportscar, the redline is like 6000 RPM. Guess you'd just have to lengthen the gearing to make it work. Very similar to the Solstice GXP motor, which I think only redlined around 6200 RPM but had a very flat torque curve from like 2000 RPM on.

The other issue is the way everything is packaged it would probably be difficult to replace this turbo with an aftermarket one if you wanted more out of it. It's sized small to make the low and mid-range torque so you could probably get more torque out of it by turning up the boost but not a huge amount of HP.

I guess what I really don't understand is why they are doing this to a damn SUV before they figured it out on a sports car (BRZ). You'd think that Toyota and Subaru would know to make a turbo out of the box the first year, along with NA. I know it's a totally different fit, but they could've done it. Why turbo an SUV when you know people are wanting Subaru's first RWD in a long time to have a turbo on it?

First off, it was Toyota planning, not Subaru, that dictated how the output of the engine should be. Subaru would have never gone RWD if it weren't for Toyota.

A small lightweight and aerodynamic car requires less power to move about effectively, while a big bulky SUV requires more power to move about at the same rate of speed.

So you can see why SUVs or big cars in general need a bit of help in every department of performance to retain driver comfort and luxury.

If you look back in 2009, Turbo and AWD was an "absolute NO" for the ideals they wanted to build into this car. If they wanted to build a car for competitive Motorsports it would be different. Instead they wanted to build a car that connects the driver to the road, and the performance requirements are at the bare minimum for that experience.

I'm moving away from a turbo Golf 5 GTI to the BRZ for the satisfaction of the linear and instant throttle response of the BRZ. The turbo lag makes the GTI more of a point and squirt car - the BRZ is more alive feeling and response is more satisfying than the turbo power in the real world, I think.

I'm pretty psyched to drive the new Forester XT, not gonna lie. It sounds really cool on paper; I especially like how they ditched the hood scoop and draw air from the bumper openings instead.

Shame it doesn't come with a manual but I think most people will be happy enough with the 8 virtual gears allowed through the CVT. I've driven the 2014 non-turbo Forester already, and it is leaps and bounds ahead of the old model. Not only does it have a way better transmission but all of the changes to the body and interior and the availability of more luxury options really make it a solid SUV choice.

I don't care what the purists say, my BRZ is too slow and gutless.

I wish that we could get some more information on what changes the 2014 will bring. I am ready to pull the trigger but I am not sure whether to get a 2013 or 2014. I will not be able to drive it until November 2013 so I guess that it really doesn't matter. I would like to see some more torque and a cure for the power dip. Other than that I think that this car is perfect for what it was designed to be.
