ATfaint to moderate clicking sound in cabin
 

Symptom: When the car is either in auto or manual mode slowing down, I only notice around the 10km mark that there sometimes is a faint to moderate click sound coming inside the cabin in the shifter area.

I was curious yesterday. So while the car was turned on & in park, I decided to take step on the brakes a few times & noticed that this "click" sound was consistent with stepping on the brakes. I then took off the shift knob & the sound was more noticeable o_O

Anyone else with an AT notice this?

I've read online that maybe this has something to do with the brake relay or something came loose with some sort of cable that belongs with the brakes & it's hitting a piece of plastic?

Of course the dealership said "I don't hear anything"

Good timing. I just noticed a click/chirp sound as well (on top of the normal engine chirping) while driving 5 minutes ago. I didn't test to see if it was connected with braking but I'll be paying attention the next time I drive.

Nah, It's in cabin right by the shifter area. It's like a click sound & that's it. It's not continuous or anything. It only happens when you slow down into 1st gear around the 10kms mark or it happened when the car was in park & I was stepping on the brake the click sound happens.

The sound you heard in the driveway is the shift interlock that prevents you from shifting out of park without your foot on the brake. Pressing the brake while in park disengages the shift interlock. Almost all automatic cars do this, some are louder than others.

Brilliant Ozzman!! I reproduced the sound every time by having the engine idling in P then pressing the brake pedal. At first I thought it came from the brake pedal but listened close to the shift lever and there it was.

I was originally noticing the same or very similar sound on braking, just as the car came to rest Having tuned into it I found it was really getting to me. It would be great if this is the same explanation. Do you think it is?

Surely there's a fix like a bit of rubber somewhere to quieten? It will be mentioned to the dealer.

I've got it too. Although mine has definitely gotten louder over time. And the odd time I'll hear a few clicks as I slow down. Time to bring her in to get checked out.

Yep. Just about every automatic should have a little keyhole somewhere near the shifter that you can stick the key into (I find key works best, there are other objects that fit) to disengage the shift interlock if needed.

Any DIY or dealer solutions to this??? I am thinking of something like soundproofing or a bit of rubber somewhere, although my dear old dad told me never to trust rubber.

If you want to make the noise obvious, eg to the service department, to keep a hand on the shifter as you come to a slow halt and it can be felt.

Dude, really, it isn't a problem, therefore no solutions.

I believe our auto trans (or at least a variant) is from a Lexus. I'd be surprised if that sound is heard in one of those.
Anyone know how Lexus avoid it?
