2013 Hyundai Elantra... with 274HP?

Hey, so, crazy idea. 274hp 2.0T sonata engine will be the same size as the 2L non-turbo elantra for the 2013 model (from what I hear), and should be a relatively painless swap.

I have a mechanic that is really excited about the new elantra facelift that will be debuting in 2013, and he suggested that, because I'm looking at a new car purchase in the near future, that I get the 2013 elantra, buy the sonata engine, and he would help me do the swap (along with springs/brakes/other things that would need upgrading for the new power) for free.

I know this is a silly/crazy idea, but it got me thinking. I would LOVE to have a sleeper elantra that pushes 280hp with some aftermarket parts. What are your thoughts?

why buy a new car and swap a new engine in it?

also you would have to buy a 2013 Sonata engine as well since swapping a older engine into a newer car is a no no.

I agree sleepers are always a fun project but usually sleepers are dirty cheap cars with fast engines tho it could be a good idea in like 5 years time

I guess my thought process was that it would be less expensive to modify an elantra to what I wanted than getting a, say, wrx from the start.

Well, I can't help you on your decision. I mean first why are you on this forum? Are you planning on getting an FR-S or a BRZ and have found some other solution? I have a new Alfa 147 and would also like to make a GTA swap and put a H/R NA 3.2l V6, but I'll have to pay very much for all homologations and documents what also takes alot of time so it is a no no. I am thinking of making my NA 1.6l I4 a NA 1.8l conversion with:
-Autodelta Sport Camshaft
-Autodelta Performance Cylinder Head
-Autodelta Sport Intake
-Autodelta Lightweight Flywheel
-Autodelta ECU Remap
and get about 180 PS from this NA 1.8l or yet 260 PS with an
-Autodelta Supercharger

but it costs about 4.500 € and other 4.000 € for the supercharger. And I really don't thinks it is worthy if I am going to buy the GT86, that will also need costly upgrades in future.

That does sound awesome, but if he's so excited to do the swap then let him do it to his own car first. Also, it won't handle nearly as well as, say, the FR-S/BRZ, nor will it be cheaper once you total everything up. Slow cars aren't really meant to go fast.

It's the classic hot rod theme; big engine in a small car. That said, it'd still be an Elantra. There are much better executions in reality for a boosted FWD car; i.e. GTI, MINI Cooper S, SRT4, MS3.

...then you mention a WRX, which is only $25k. You'll be hard pressed to get an Elantra + powertrain + swap bits for that little, not to mention the risk that you'll never get the car to run correctly.

Now, I'm not hating on the idea. If you want to have the worlds only 2.0T Elantra and have the funds, time, and skills at your disposal, by all means go for it with gusto. I just want to point out that there are better ways to spend $25k-30k and have a car that works and is well sorted out of the box.

Think you are wasting time unless you can read Hongul and see what tuning shops in Korea have been doing w/ that engine (1st year for the Genesis Coupe having it) so no US based shop has exp.

Read the forum heading and ask that question again.

Torque steer... hope you upgrade suspension... wheels and tires first.

D4ng3r 01-02-2012 07:13 PM

All extremely valid points. You have more knowledge about what this swap would entail than I do; and yes it appears its a losing battle when it comes to saving money and uniqueness. Thanks for the input guys :)

and p.s. yeah, I'm on this forum because I'm also considering the FR-S as a future purchase.

Thanks guys!

You could always turbo the new Elantra Coupe coming this year. No engine swap required. Should be similar to the Forte Koup, and Turbokits has some nice setups for them already.
