Dealership oil changes...
 

Took a little while to reflect on this. After my first service I went in-- I had specified for the oil to be changed-- and was told that the oil and filter had not been changed.

The reason I was given was that old gem, that a "special fill" was included from factory, and changing this out too early might result in overconsumption of oil (as with some Hilux engines apparently) and other dilemmas and that I should wait to at least 7,500km.

I personally think this is garbage and don't particularly understand how tiny flakes of metal are meant to help an engine bed in, special fill or not-- has anybody else recieved this sort of negative pressure against changing the arrangement set forth by the manufacturer?

I also was told not to change the oil and they wouldn't do it for me..
But at least you have peace of mind that the oil and filter actually gets changedwhen you Diy..
Changed mine at 2000kms myself, car feels smoother and seems to get more km's out of the tank..

My post doesn't help; no, I haven't had your experience. I just went to an independent service crowd and supplied my own oil (Mobil1 5/30) and genuine filter and asked them to do the work. Oil change and filter at approximately 4000 kms.

I went to my dealership and paid for an oil change at 1,000 miles. No questions, no poblems.

Some manufacturers do use an oil that assists running in for the first few 000k.
If you were to use synthetic from the word go,there is a chance that the oil/piston rings don't bed in correctly,hence high oil consumption etc.
After 7500k you should be fine to change to whatever.

The "special fill" is usually just a mineral oil with less or no friction modifiers to allow for quick piston ring seating & more anti-wear additives.
Manufacturer’s break-in recommendations should be followed. Dropping the factory fill too early could cause more damage than good as MACCAA mentioned. After 7500K it'll be more than fine to change.

I don't understand the insistence that somehow Toyota knows less about engine break in than we do... If engine performance and longevity were significantly improved by changing at 100, 1000, 3000, 4000 miles instead of the first being at 7500, don't you think they would have us do that? Especially with the extended warranty coverage they offer on the engine. It's in their best interest to make it work as good as it possibly can for as long as it can.

They have to work to the lowest common denominator. There is a huge difference between an engine that only goes to church on Sundays and an engine that has started track life at 500 kilometers. I have a Filtermag attached ( http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ight=filtermag ). I asked to keep the filter when the oil and filter were changed. I cut open the filter and yes, there were deposits of metal caught by the magnet. It wasn't a huge amount but it was there. Also, there is no data base on which to draw conclusions as to what is best procedure and even if there were one again driver variables might not relate to the way you drive the car.

SubieNate; I'm not even saying this is about break-in, so much as the "special fill" myth hanging on-- What's the "special fill" gonna be on this? 0W SAE? Lighter oil often goes in new engines for break-in, or a mineral fill, but this is synthetic from day one. Plenty of other dealerships are happy to do a change 'early'. When I drive this car I'm driving it briskly so it definitely counts as heavy duty use.

Also; I don't trust toyota to know more about a Subaru based engine than I do. Especially when the dealers initially didn't have oil-- were they just avoiding losing money on an oil change?
