Rear brake problem
 

Hey everyone...I don't remember hearing anything about this problem before so I'm going to share my issue.

I heard a squealing type noise from the right rear area of my FRS. I let it go for a few days thinking it would just go away. I was wrong. The sound continued but no issues driving the car.

I had a free minute today so I took it to the dealership. They pulled the right rear tire and then brake pads. There was barely a sliver of brake pad left. Had I gone another day or 2 it could've been very bad. The dealer called Scion and I'm getting a new caliper and pads this week.

In the meantime ill be driving a new XB. Did anyone else have this problem?

So the piston seized in the caliper?

They haven't told me what the cause was yet. I should find out tomorrow and hopefully get my car back.

What does everyone think about the rotor and possible uneven wear? Should I be asking for two new rotors for the rear?

Was the squealing occurng everytime you applied the brakes?

Do the rotors looked damaged?

As far as I know how warranty works they would only replace the one side if mileage is not high or the other side is not exhibiting a problem. How many miles do you have? If there was going to be an obvious diffence in size I would replace both but I am assuming its low mileage so it be a minimal difference. They should however turn the brake rotor on the opposite but that is more so the pads can seat correctly in case any surface rust or rust ridges have developed or rotor has been worn differently then what the new larger pad will occupy. The calipers piston seal should accomodate any difference and you wont tell a difference if the driver side rotor is .005" smaller. Happy Trails bud.

The noise was all the time. It was the wear indicator I suppose.

I have 10,000 miles. The right pad was down to just a sliver. Another day or two and it would be gone. Thanks for your help.

What are your driving habits? Do you often see the traction light come on while driving? Have a separate set of winter tires? It may be that EBD or Traction control was contributing to the excessive wear though unlikely.

I don't drive slow but by no means do I beat on it. I'm always gentle with my brakes too. The traction control light comes on occasionally, not everyday. I do have snows.

Somebody already mentioned the Rotors earlier, and I was wondering the same thing. Do those look damaged? I would get Toyota to replace those as well if they are

I didn't inspect the rotor but at a quick glance it looked ok. There was still some pad material left so if anything the rotor would be worn more on one side.

Someone casually mentioned it above(the EBD). If you missed that little word in his post, you might want to look further into that.

The EBD is basically like an LSD(the opposite), but for the brakes. As soon as I read about it in the manual I thought of this thread.

I somewhat understand what EBD does and its purpose. I don't know how my driving could possibly lead that to a completely worn set of pads. I don't autox, nor have I been to the track. None of my driving has been overly aggressive, so I don't believe that the EBD could have been that active. Unless there is an issue with the EBD causing my right rear brake to apply more often or harder.

Should get my car back today. We'll see what they found, and if it happens again, we'll know they fixed the wrong part.
