Toyota confirmed to be exploring forced induction for GT86 mid-cycle refresh
|
I think it's another grain of salt in an overflowing shaker.
Fact of the matter is, there will be a more powerful 86, it's just a matter of how, and when. |
I enjoy Tada-san...
TC/SC won't be coming on 86... til Tada-san makes 2 other cars. One of em might have TC/SC |
I can imagine with a turbo, supercharger, or hybrid motor it would bring the cost over $30k
|
"Exploring" forced induction is hardly news. Yeah, no shit. Just bring it on guys, we.ll buy it.
The market has already proven that owners will throw ridiculous amounts of money at their cars for minimal gains. Listen up toyota.... blow this thing to 300hp, put a factory warranty around it, some HID lights, and I.ll write a check for $35k. Deal? |
Let this be true. Plan on getting the 2015
|
Subaru are the turbo experts , so they will probably engineer any F.I.

Hopefully they will be selling these SC's or TC's so they can be installed on the FRS that I already own. A TRD aftermarket. I know it will be mucho money, but Toyota will be more likely to honor warranties when installed vs a third party forced induction system.
|
I'll tell you how they could get more power without force induction. They could use a new ECU or reflash the existing one, they can put a bigger exhaust and CAI then use a higher end intercooler then possibly change some of the engine internals. Boom you have an extra 50hp or so. I'm using my Nissan's 2.5L as a guesstimation, with a catback and cai I can get an extra 20hp out of it. They are two different engines but the outcome will be about the same.
|
The real question is, when is it considered a 'mid-life facelift'? Not for another 2 years?

50hp:lol: These motors are super efficient. 100hp per liter. It is quite difficult to get much beyond that w.o forced induction. Certainly tuning, intake and exhaust is not going to make 20hp. Engine internals? Like what? More compression? not likely. Cams? Ok, sure. We can get more peak hp with different cams and tuning. The result would be something you would not want to drive on the street. No. Forced induction is it. Everything else is chipping at the edges. |

Actually I know what I'm talking about. :laughabove: |
I'm rather happy with the car I have for 25k. If I wanted to spend an extra 10 grand, I could have just gotten a 370Z sport and called it a day.
The motor is pretty damn good as is and reminds me a lot of the S2000 motor (small displacement, high rev, lightweight). Adding a bunch of heavy stuff in the engine bay will change what the car is about. Would I like a little more power? Maybe... but for daily driving, the thing is about as fun as can be while remaining economical. |

I agree but if I wanted a little more power I would just do something noninvasive like an exhaust and cai. |
I respect the engineering and science of turbocharging. However, for engine longevity and lower cost of ownership, I favor a naturally-aspirated engine. From an aesthetic standpoint there is a certain purity to an engine that gets its power simply from good design and high compression. Some car companies, not all, use turbos as a way of getting extra power from mediocre engines.

I thought Toyota and Subaru already "explored" this. Toyota's doing a supercharger and Subaru said no.

More air = more fuel, means worse MPG. I loved the sound of a screaming turbo and the progressive acceleration curve, but having driven a simple intake/exhaust tC for the past 8 years, I've really begun to like the power delivery of N/A engines. |

As long as I am getting above 10 mpg, I really don't care that much. While I'm happy to have better gas mileage, I'll take power over MPG any day. I'm not a delivery driver, so if it costs me an extra $20 a week, it's no matter.
|
The only refresh they should do, here in america at least, is bring more options to the FR-S or, at the very most, bring the TRD GT86 here, because this whole mono spec thing is becoming ridiculous now.
|
You think you have it bad...in Australia we get the GT and GTS...that's good...but you go across a small stretch of water and get them and the TRD...now that's just teasing us...it's horrible having it so close but knowing they have no plans on bringing it here...most places here won't even deal with the trd stuff for you to buy separately.
|
Forced induction sucks, i'm so tired of Turboed cars. NA all day.

Possible hybrid 86, turbo 86, or SC 86
Saw this on Jalopnik. Thought I would share with you guys. Personally I would hop all over a SC 86..
What do you all think of a possible HYBRID DRIVE 86 though? Similar to the likes of some of the new cars at Geneva? Discuss http://jalopnik.com/could-the-scion-...perf-451712651 |

Oh, and BTW abt HP talk in thread. Even w/ non-OEM conforming exhaust setups (no cats & ridiculous sound levels), CAI, e85 etc--50hp hasn't happened yet. |

2. Japanparts.com if you want to buy the TRD stuff 3. Talk to Stevo_12v on here |
Americans shouldn't get their hopes up.
Everything boils down to cost here. Just look at the MKVII GTI. They'll strip absolutely everything down to keep it cost effective. |
I think they'll have a turbo Mustang with IRS and a lighter weight to box in the ring with, then.
We can only wait and see though! |
