Worn floor mats - Covered under bumper to bumper warranty?

So I've had my BRZ for about 2,600 miles and my floor mats are already showing signs of wear. I could easily replace them with some rubber mats and be good to go, but thats money out of my pocket for something that should have lasted longer. Plus I'd like to have a set of good condition OEM mats since I plan on having the car for a long time.

So, does anyone know if the Subaru 36k bumper to bumper warranty will cover floor mats? Yeah its minor and stupid, but they shouldn't wear out in 2,600 miles on a $30,000 car.:iono:

Mine is starting on the fr-s too with only 2.8k, but I'm not too worried about it

Yruyur 03-07-2013 10:23 AM

If they are not covered under warranty then @RedLeader makes some kick ass heel plates with the brz or frs logo on them

Yea same with mine at 2000 miles. They looked like theyd be tough but i guess not

Philly758 03-07-2013 10:29 AM

I'm not too worried about it either. But if they will give me a new set just for asking, and I'm entitled to it, then why not? Also, if it does work this could be good info for everyone else with the same issue.

I do recall seeing a heel plate mod on the forums for what I'm assuming was this same issue. Now I know who to search for if I go that direction, thanks!

There's all-coverage Weathertech units...not really rubber, not really plastic (some kind of polymer). I'm not sure you'd call them "sporty" though. They are very good in my opinion and use the stock retainer clips.

supramkivtt2jz 03-07-2013 10:45 AM

Thats insteresting... your floor mats are different than mine. Mine are a "tougher" material.....

edit: I just realized youre driving a BRZ.

Those are what I want to avoid, and falls into my mental category of "rubber".. I am looking for a nicer fabric version. personal preference ... I think as a child I was abused by rubber floormats...

I had Subaru all-weather mats that were about 1cm thick rubber...these are very different.

You could look into Coco mats or whatever they're called, @bestwheelbase has posted the link to their website before. Very cool and still retain that "sporty" character you're looking for, I think.

The best option may just be a heel-pad installed to your already messed up stock mats...they're messed up so cutting a hole or two (or taping it?) shouldn't be a problem.

It does not look to be a easy solution, you need to special order anything that has the retainers, unless I am looking at the wrong site. their product though does not look like what I am looking for anyway, while it does look rugged-er...

www.cocomats.com is the place we suggested. They are based in South Carolina. The mats are made to order. It is perfectly easy. "Driver's side mat grommets or Velcro is included" in the price and they will place them wherever you want.

@OrbitalEllipses thanks for the heads up.

I'm at 2,600 miles and will be back at the dealer at 3,000 for my first service. I'll bring it up then and let you know what happens.

I was reading a review the other day where they said the edges of the floor mats unraveled and fell apart within their 2 month test period. So I don't think these issues are uncommon and I'm sure the warranty question has been brought up.

You will be told that they are a wear item like wiper blades, tires and brake pads are. It's not the manufacturers fault you chose to drive with the particular style of shoes you do. I drive wearing a pair of Cole Hann driving shoes with a rounded heel. My FR-S mats look like new with 7,000 miles.

Thats funny because I was specifically told that brake pads are covered under the bumper to bumper warranty when I bought the car. Subaru's website confirms that and includes wiper blades too.

The floor mats probably dont fall under the "wear item" warranty, but I'd argue that they are defective and fall under "repairs at no charge".

Wear Item Limited Warranty

WEAR ITEM COVERAGE is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Items covered are brake pad/shoe linings, clutch linings, and wiper blades.

Repairs at no Charge

Defective parts will be repaired, or at the option of SOA or your Authorized SUBARU Dealer, replaced with a new or remanufactured parts without charge to you for labor and materials.

Philly758 03-07-2013 12:07 PM

More info from Subaru's warranty site...

Tires you noted before as a wear item is not included under the warranty, because they have their own manufacturer warranty.

They say they do not cover "normal deterioration", but this amount of wear over 2,600 miles is excessive. The shoes I wear do not have a sharp edge and I mostly drive highway, so there isn't a lot of movement.

What is Not Covered:

Parts Covered By Other Warranties

These warranties do not cover any parts, such as tires, which are covered by their own separate warranties.

Maintenance and Adjustment Services; Normal Deterioration

These warranties do not cover the cost of parts or labor involved in performing any normal maintenance services. There is also no coverage for normal deterioration or fading of paint, soft trim, cosmetic and appearance items.

KSC 03-07-2013 12:11 PM

The BRZ mats do seem a bit thin, and obviously, it's possible, but I almost want as to ask "How is that even possible in so short a time?!" Do you drive in size 15 combat boots or something?!

Seriously, though, does it rain a lot by you, is your driveway muddy? I dunno, it looks like you have some stains and wear on the actual carpet as well.

Philly758 03-07-2013 12:23 PM

I drive in these, they are soft rubber with a somewhat rounded heal, definitely not a sharp edge:
http://www.shermanshoes.net/store/me...calade_05b.jpg

It is winter, so I have tracked some moisture in. But I alway knock the dirt, snow, water off of my shoes before I place them on the mat. The dirt/stains in the photos aren't as bad as they look (iPhone photo with LED flash at night makes it look much worse).

OrbitalEllipses 03-07-2013 12:24 PM

I could hear the stock mats rubbing/squeaking from my rounded heel dress shoes...there were some wear marks before I switched them out at 4K miles, but nothing that bad. Cheap mats are cheap.

Obviously my mistake. Sorry. (I was relying too much on a different manufacturers warranty)

My wiper inserts were replaced at 8k because they were already streaking and I only had the car for 5 months.

DSOmegaX 03-08-2013 12:07 PM

Didn't expect the mats to wear THAT quickly. I was looking around japan parts and noticed the JDM mats are different. Wonder if they're stronger.

Carpet Mats

Same material as their trunk mat: Trunk Mat

Might want to look into Lloyd Mats: http://lloydmats.com/

I have their Rubbertite series which I use for winters, but they have nice carpet ones as well.

I attempted to navigate their site, they dont seem to sell to the public, nor be able to prove to me that they make mats that fit the BRZ, how did you order yours,... does it still have the retainer clip?

Anthonytpt 03-08-2013 01:34 PM

I try not to wear cleats while driving. I would imagine the FR-S mats are made from similar materials. I'm not having trouble keeping mine clean and "like new," but the only element I deal with in Southern California is a little rain.

Click on the Where to Buy link on top, then pick the vendor of your choice. Mine does use the factory retainer clip.

Thats why I made them replace them. Something about it being under 12k mileage meant they had to or something.

raphy 03-08-2013 02:28 PM

the mats are part of the wear and tear list and I have confirmed this with my Toyota dealer. They say they get this from time to time and say footwear is the reason and not the mats.

Nope. Totally different shapes.

Noticed mine showing wear after just 500+ miles. Have had the car less than a week. Checked with the dealer and they are not an accessory item, they are listed under chassis parts and are sold individually. The driver's side mat alone is $108.00 retail. Didn't think to ask about warranty, I will next time I'm there.

Just ordered the black/red set from Spoonz, they have a vinyl heel mat on the driver's side. Meanwhile I threw in a cheap ($1.98) flat square mat from Wal-Mart to protect the stock mat for now.

Cheap mats for sure and too bad because they really look nice. Oh, and I wear well worn sneakers too. Nothing sharp or hard to cut into them.

Clembo 03-11-2013 11:31 PM

Spoonz Auto Mat Set for FR-S

Just got the black/red set today from Spoonz Auto, $99 on eBay and free shipping. These are really nice, very plush and heavy - one of these mats weighs more than all four of the cheap OEM Scion mats. Fit is exactly the same as OEM including the fasteners - I was very impressed with the fit. These have a heavy padded heel area that looks like it will hold up well.

These are a little darker black than the charcoal factory carpets and mats but the red binding sets them off well. Binding looks the same as the OEMs but is red instead of charcoal. Spoonz Auto was great to deal with - perfect packing, quick free UPS shipping and they even included a set of free retractable ear buds as a bonus!

I packed up the OEM mats in the Spoonz box and stored them away. That way they will be as new as possible when it comes time to sell or trade.

Keep in mind that the OEM Scion mats are only sold individually. The fronts are $108 each and the rears are $40 each according to my dealer. That's $296 for one set of cheap mats! So for $99, these are a bargain. I don't know how they will wear but they have to be better than the OEMs.

Here they are in my car. The breaks you see in the binding are just the plush black fibers laying over the edge.
