Having an extremely tough time deciding...
So I have a pretty hard decision to make come next year and am looking for a little insight. Now granted both of these cars have yet to be released and the only personal driving comparison can't be made until I get a chance to test drive them both. Also, I know there are a million and three threads dedicated to the comparison so don't :search: me, I just really need to break down both and get some opinions.
So enough beating around the bush, the two cars I had in mind were the FR-S/BRZ (My discount runs with scion/toyota, so the BRZ is more than likely ruled out unless there is something game changing about it that isn't offered for the scion) AND 2013 Genesis Coupe (upped to 350bHP and something like 290lb-ft) Now here's my problem: The Facts:
Now with that in mind here is the part I'm having trouble deciding upon. Regardless of the car I plan on putting work into both, Daily Driving both, Tracking both, and buying either (leasing is not an option, I WANT my next car). My issue with the FR-S is simply the power and how much work will I need to put into it to get to the goal of 300-350bHP. I don't plan on forcing any more out of the motor I want the car to be drive-able. My issue with the Genesis is I'm unsure of its handling potential. The power is there, and I'll probably massage it up to a little over 400... but how will it compare to the FR-S in terms of handling feel and actual ability. halp..:( |
You'll need lower compression postons and a supercharger/turbo to see 300 bhp in reality you would only need 280 to be on par with a 400 HP genisis acceleration wise
Edit: the az6 can handle 300 HP in the 86 but can the genisis tranny handle 400 bhp? |
oh boy!
obviously you are a magazine racer and mostly care about the numbers. I can't believe that people compair the FRS/BRZ to a Hyundai which lacks built quality, built by company that has pretty much NO sports car experience. the Genesis doesn't handle well, let alone compared to what this subatoy will handle. resale value on a genesis will be junk, I'm pretty sure the subatoy will hold it's value really well. The sole purpose of this car was to satisfy the driver's needs/wants. I truly hope that people with your mentality NEVER buy a BRZ/FRS. please buy a Genesis. |

Also the whole "DI" argument well DI can be used to make some pretty nice numbers when modifications are done look @ the BMW N54 and N55 |
Hyundai has a motorsports history, but they have only participated in WRC and Formula 1 for the past 12 years.

"The sole purpose of this car was to satisfy the driver's needs/wants." lolol come on. you've just defeated yourself here, buddy. If the FR-S is fun with 200/150, I sincerely doubt it would be less fun with more power. |
The Genesis coupe with the turbo DI motor will have the most potential as compared to the V6 NA with DI. It is always easier to get another 75hp or so out of a factory turbo motor than to try to bring 50hp out of a small displacement NA motor. The 4 cyl turbo Genesis may handle better too but I cannot be sure on that. Additionally, the twin scroll and intercooler will make it essentially into a slightly detuned EVO motor that it essentially is. As far as I know EVO Xs are easily in the 300whp plus range with tunes and boltons.
TRD and STI MAY put out a turbo/scharged version of the BRZ/FR-S. But that is pure speculation at this point. Ultimately you will not have the horsepower potential known with the BRZ/FR-S for at least a few years. The coming WRX usage at 270hp hints to good potential though. If you are single and is good at driving in the wet/snow with RWD then by all means either car can make a good daily car. On the racing end if you plan to drag race I'd opt for something else. If you want to AutoX and track I'd lean heavily towards the FR-S/BRZ. The Genesis will come with the better warranty. If you really can't wait a year or so then I'd probably suggest you go with the Genesis as you will not have a turbo option for now with the FR-S and BRZ. The Genesis coupe is also not on its first year of production so a little searching should answer your questions on their reliability and handling. Lastly, I believe the aftermarket on the Genesis is pretty weak. You know the Japanese cars will have good aftermarket support. This does not mean there is no support for the genesis once the upgraded 4 comes out. |

I feel your pain. I waited for the GC for a long time. It released and just weighed tooooo much. I only have 1 problem on the frs. I want the frs exterior with the brz interior. I may just go brz and swaP bumpers with somone.

Drive them back to back. Buy the one you like more. They are cars that were designed with different goals and I think that will be immediately obvious when you drive both of them. Some people will prefer the way the 86 drives, some people will prefer the GC. No forum thread is going to change anyone's mind about it.
There is already a huge thread about this http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2161 |
From reading the first post, you already have your mind set. So why we need to convince you?

To me it sounds like you want everything from the AS1 except it's engine. You want the tranny, handling, size, etc, but the Gen's engine and wheel bolt pattern
