simple solution, just don't keep the bike on the rack at your place..

Glad to hear everything held up and you still have a bike. Can you not just turn your handle bars in and tuck the bike up against the wall in your apartment? I have a little wheel stand I put mine in and it hides in our den in our apartment now. |
It's a small apartment but I'm moving out anyway soon, so no worries about that.

As usual, I am a bit late to the show, but I wanted to post some pictures of that_guy's solution. I am using a 1-up rack like many of the other people. Everything went together perfectly. It feels very secure. I am quite happy with it. Once again, I want to thank that_guy for doing this for us. It saved me a lot of work and I'm sure several failed attempts at doing this myself. At any rate, here are the pictures.

Hey guys! So after two attempted thievery in our place (one for the bike, another for a huge jack I store outside in a hidden stash), I am contemplating on selling my bike rack and switching over to folding bikes instead, so I can put them in the trunk where they will actually be safer, or store it inside the apartment (they will fit, but not full bikes). Any good recommendations? Looking for a road bike. I saw this site, they're a bit expensive but the bike rack may pay for more than half of its price. http://www.montaguebikes.com/folding-bike/

How much are you thinking of selling for? |
Got the bars from that-guy this past week and a 1up rack as well. Holds the bike perfectly. Couple comments: On my set, the groove in the bars that the 1up rack brackets are supposed to fit in was maybe a couple thousandths too narrow, making it hard to get the rack to seat into the groove easily. I fixed that in about 1 minute by just kissing the 1up brackets with my bench grinder.
Secondly, my 1up rack came with really long carriage bolts, so the female screw thingies (technical term) that clamp the rack were bottoming way before tightening the rack to the bars. This has nothing to do with that-guy's parts, it's just a feature of the 1up rack itself. I cut about ten threads off the carriage bolts, and everything is fine. Did anyone else have that issue? Seems strange I am the only one to mention it, or I just missed it. Now that everything fits, it takes less than three minutes to assemble everything and load the bike. No changeover is needed to switch from my road bike to my mtn bike. Super nice setup, thanks to that-guy for making the bars. Mike |

Still haven't figured the bracing to hold up a twin yet. Any hints? |
Any more of these for sale? I'd like to purchase a set.
|
Finally got mine done, same deal. Bought some 1 1/4" stainless rod, made a drawing, took them and my OEM towhook to a machinist. Told him the threaded end needs to match the tow hook. They're heavy, but they work. In the future I might have them cut down and end turned down to fit inside a tube, but in reality I'll prob just leave it like it is.

Thanks guys for all the comments and images. They look great and I'm glad everyone is enjoying them!
I've been away for a few weeks (destination wedding, moving into a new home, etc), so I haven't been able to attend to the slew of PM's I've received on this. But to those inquiring about buying these, unfortunately I'm not a vendor here and I only ran off a couple small batches to help out some forum members. I'll look into what would be required to run off another batch, but it likely wont be for a few months as I'm swamped right now. My apologies as I'd love to help but funds and time to get this into gear are just not there right now. Sorry! |

I also received the tow hook bars from that_guy from his last batch and recently had a chance to try them out. I went with the 1up rack as well, and ran into the same problem mistressmotorsports did with the 1up brackets not fitting into the grooves on the bars. I just had to shave maybe 1mm off the side to get them to fit.
After that everything went together perfectly and the bike rack feels rock solid. Quick and easy setup and tear down. Very happy with this solution. :happyanim: Thanks that_guy! http://i.imgur.com/hAKnw0x.jpg |
Sounds like 1UP changed the dimensions of the lower bracket because there is 4-5mm of space on mine where they fit into the channel. If I run another batch, I'll be sure to make an adjustment to the dimensions. Thanks for pointing this out guys!

Agreed. |
got mine done... im not sure about the bike rack, i might buy something else

Yeah, that doesn't look super secure with the gripper that close to the bottom bracket. My Thule Big Mouth usually clamps my 29er's on the upper half of the midpoint on the down tube. I was never really pleased with that setup, either, though.
|
yeah that was exactly my thought, i might buy the yakima frontloader
|
This is awesome :)
|
Is the 1UP the only bike rack that will perfectly center the bike in between the bars?
It looks like lost of the Thule or Yakima racks tend to have the front bar almost directly under the front wheel which shifts the whole bike to one side of the car. |

I have both the roof rack and hitch mount for my cars. Not one single issue to this date. I don't work for them but man do I love their rack! |
@that_guy any plans for another batch in the near future?

I'd be in, too! |

Probably looking at end of 2014 or early 2015 though. I'm still recovering financially from moving into a new house and trying to keep the FR-S funded as it sits in the garage. I know, first world problems. Stay tuned and to those who have come up with their own clever variations, keep them coming! |

Thanks again man! :thanks: |
I would like some.
Thanks |
Definitely interested as well. My car and my bike are my two babies. But I hate to see one get dirty because of the other. Looks like an awesome design. Thanks for building them.
|
I'd buy a set as well if you make another batch. An alternative to manage the purchases and billing etc would be to put it on Kickstarter. They charge a five percent haircut on the funds but perhaps worth it.

Stay tuned guys and thanks for the continued interest. If I can get this to work, I'll run off another batch. Just so everyone is aware, the going rate is $200 CDN plus shipping. I'm trying my best to get that down, but that seems to be where it all comes out after production and shipping to me. |
I'm in when you restart production.
|
FYI, I've finally decided to sell my setup: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1985936

Standing by for an order. Spring will be here in 90 days. (crosses fingers)

Any of these set ups left for sale ?

At the present time I'm fresh out. I'm contemplating making some more but I've been extremely busy lately and unfortunately this has fallen by the wayside.
I will be sure to post here the second I run another batch. As mentioned in previous pages as well, I might look at another avenue of sale so that it's easier on members here versus PM each time. I'm again, not a vendor, so I'm not making a business out of this. I, like many of you, just like riding my bike and driving this car. It's nice to be able to blend those two passions! Stay tuned and thanks for the continued support and interest. |
would it be possible to get two bikes on this set up? typically i'd have just one but it would be good in case i take the girlfriend out as well. and if you do another batch i'd be interested. planned on going the uhaul hitch rout but they seem to have changed their design and a lot more of the hitch would show under the bumper.
