Down pipe vs. Front pipe

Ok serious noob question here, coming from a Tc so idk whats more beneficial, adding a down pipe or a front pipe... Actually whats the difference in them period? Is it just boxer engines that have them? Cause all i know about is a down pipe lol

I think that the 'down pipe' might be slightly better than the front pipe because it take 'some' of the torque dip away but you probably won't notice much of a sound difference as a front pipe would make it slightly louder, or raspy with a 'test pipe' on a lot of after market cat back exhaust systems if it's non resonated you will be in "rasp city". LOL Hope this helped :happy0180:

Don't get confused. There is no "down pipe".

Catless front pipes will LOSE POWER without a tune, as tested by @FA20Club.com in this thread . They will also increase RASP in the exhaust note without a resonator.

Catted front pipes will not lose power without a tune, again according to FA20Club, and they will maintain a mild exhaust note.

Nameless puts out an overpipe (downpipe) /frontpipe combo ) and say replacing your midpipe showed negligible gains. Replace them both and leace the midpipe with the resonator alone imo

Paging @86_ZN6, he sells WORKS midpipes that apparently make an additional 6 (crank?) HP with their axleback, for a total of 9 HP gained.... :iono:

Hmm I may have to look into itm hopefully he will chime in, I was planning on getting the dp/fp, headers if I dont go turbo and keeping the stock mid pipe. May pickup that midpioe first though if its and extra 6hp.

Downpipe/front-pipe are used pretty interchangeably here; traditionally (in the turbo Subaru world) the downpipe is the pipe that goes from the hotside of the turbo and forms the first portion of the exhaust (excluding the pre-turbo elements: turbo manifold and up-pipe).

I would disagree that the catless front pipe loses power without a tune, that was tested with a combination of parts.

Catless front pipes sound like ass. Stick with catted regardless. The difference isn't even noticeable but everyone else will thank you for your non raspy crap sounding exhaust.

Agree with Joe on this one. The consensus among the tuners is you don't need to touch your tune when you change your OP/FP/Catback. Perhaps @FA20Club.com could clarify what was going on in that scenario.

Disagree with this also, my catless front pipe and overpipe sound just fine with the stock catback and also when i had the MXP exhaust on there.

There is no downpipe on this car due to the position of the engine.

Anything running 'down' from the engine would be scraping the ground.

I think I read someone stated that the best mod for our cars is new headers, replacing the front pipe or mid pipe. We won't see any gain.

Okay, so you've picked two extremely quiet systems which are the only way to really mask the rasp a catless frontpipe provides. The only loud system that has a catless front pipe that even sounds decent is the V1 with a Borla UEL header.
