Alternator Options
 
For those of us running or looking to run massive amperage drawing systems, what alternator options are you considering?

I haven't seen any increased amperage alternators for the FR-S/BRZ/GT86.

Does anyone have a link to the stock max alternator output?

Some considerations:

Smaller diameter pulley on the alternator
Dual alternator installation
Replace with higher output ALT.
Any other suggestions?

i looked here for Scion TC alternators might be the same size. but i havent really considered buying one. im sure someone could chime in about whether it would work or not.

Maybe look at Subaru replacement alternators, since it is a Subie engine.

I'm considering the second alternator setup. I'll have to look around in the engine bay to see where I could weld up a second alternator bracket. I'll post pictures later (likely Saturday) with the proposed spot for scrutiny and commentary.

So apparently none of you looked at the alternator before asking this???


It says on the label of the alternator that it is a 130A alternator.

please be mindful that this car already has a significant load due to the 90-100V required to open the DI against upwards of 200 BAR fuel rail pressure.....

I own an Asphalt FR-S but yes, have not had a chance to look at the alternator due to workload. I was assuming it would be similar to most modern passenger cars, in the 90-110 range. 130 is surprising but you are saying the systems require this amperage? It is assumed the manufacturer will install an alternator that can run all the systems of the car simultaneously and then some, but not an excessive amount more. This is why almost always, for a big system build the alternator will need to be upgraded or supported to mitigate headlight dimming and reduced battery/alternator lifespan.

The system I am putting into this car crashed my alternator on my first build. Installed a high output, but still had headlight dimming issues, so I'm looking for advice and I will have a DIY for whatever I do to be informative for others with this vehicle wishing to install heavy draining audio systems or additional electronics.

So, this thread is about what is the best choice for this car (based on availability, cost, ease of use, effectiveness)

Mike Singer Alternators is able to make a 275a stock alternator replacement.

Since I've used DC Power alternators before, they were my first choice. Here's the response I got from them:

Has anyone successfully installed the Mike Singer alternator or any others for that matter?

I've had good experience with Excessive Amperage, Nations Auto Electric, Mechman, and others. I've contacted Nations, but awaiting a response.

How much more engine power does it take to run it, though? I doubt you can get that much additional amperage just by upping the alternator efficiency, and there's always TANSTAAFL to consider. That extra electrical power has to come from somewhere, after all.

Just got the Mike Singer 275A alternator last night, by hand it didn't feel all that much more difficult to spin. I see what you are saying. I'll have to ask how it's done.

Are we concerned about massive sub draw? I thought same some decent D10 charge caps do the trick I've tested a 5.1k audison with two 10" no issues or dimming etc when car was running... Unless you're going all out like a stereo comp set and don't want to run caps I don't see the need. (For now) anyhow.

Maybe higher spin rate, & improved efficiency?

Definitely has a higher spin rate. The pulley is somewhere near half the diameter.

I opted for the externally regulated version, so I have quite a bit more install work to do prior to having the Singer alternator operating. I hooked up the stock alt to an ammeter see what it's current output was at idle right after cranking. 30 amps.
