FR-S named #1 Sports Car for the money by US News

Add this to the already large stack of positive press, this time from a non car-dedicated news outlet:

Quote:

Reviewers agree that the 2013 Scion FR-S has shaken up the affordable sports car class. Separated at birth from its sibling, the Subaru BRZ, the Scion FR-S brings a surprising amount of performance and value to enthusiasts. Autoblog writes, “Is the FR-S one of next year's enthusiast bargains? Absolutely, and that is a conclusion we consider irrefutable.”

It all starts under the hood. The FR-S’ engine is mounted low and as far back in the engine bay as possible. Combined with its low center of gravity and a performance-tuned suspension, critics say these attributes make the FR-S one of the best-handling sports cars on the market. And although it trails rivals like the Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z with significantly less power, its light weight and slick transmission choices make the FR-S a lively, enjoyable drive.

The Scion FR-S is the 2013 Best Sports Car for the Money because it has the best combination of ownership costs and positive reviews in its class.
I do find it strange that they don't mention the BR-Z under "other cars to consider"...

I find it more interesting that they ranked the FR-S above a Miata but the BRZ below a Miata..

Considering they are both basically the same car... wouldn't it make more sense to have both either above or below?

Pscylo 02-23-2013 08:12 AM

due to cost probably...

inb4 FR-S is the most common sports car on the road

DaveH 02-23-2013 10:33 AM

I wish it wasn't getting more common, I see so many white colors

campy 02-23-2013 10:43 AM

More common = cheaper parts. The miata is common.

shawnperolis 02-23-2013 10:51 AM

I wouldn't mind it becoming more common... The more common it is, the more aftermarket parts we get.

dem00n 02-23-2013 12:32 PM

I wish humans weren't so common, i'm so tired of seeing them everywhere.

When we going to start sending people to Mars?

Meh.

Drunknhero 02-23-2013 12:37 PM

I like it to be more common. But just don't turn it into another rice civics common...

With the history of the front engine RWD 4 cylinder not being a good one considering how many have shown up on the market and in just a few years been discontinued I want to see one of these on every corner to let all the auto makers know that the market is here and just wants to see it done correctly and we will buy them like crazy.

I don't mind them becoming common. The success of the twins will definitely aid the engineering of future sports cars from toyota and subaru. If the twins sales fell flat on their face, you can guarantee that corporate would axe the idea of more sports cars. So with the success of the twins, Tada-san and Akio Toyoda can say "we told you so" :)

if you compare ratings...

FR-S
Overall:
9.1
Critics' Rating: 9.7
Performance: 8.9
Exterior: N/A
Interior: 8.0
Safety: 10.0

BRZ
Overall:
8.5
Critics' Rating: 9.3
Performance: 8.0
Exterior: 7.5
Interior: 7.7
Safety: 10.0

also, reliability is 3 1/2 vs 3 in favor of the fr-s....

hoc can it be so different....?

^ Would you honestly take US News to be a credible source for expert reviews of a sports car? I sure don't.

Hope it turns into a civic resale value.
