But the real question is, how are the roads/drive?

It was too tempting not to go. :D

128 is nice. Relatively smooth roads, some rocks here and there though. There's a small resort, just before the dam, you have to worry about since there's a lot of cars parked on the small shoulder and foot traffic. Once you get passed the resort, the only thing you really need to worry about are bicyclists and blind corners. There weren't a whole lot of cars on the road and most of them pulled off to the side to let me pass.

Knoxville road isn't as smooth. There's a fair amount of rough patches and it seemed to get worse the further north you drive. You also need to watch for bicyclists and, since there's no shoulder, you need a bit of patience to wait for oncoming traffic before you can pass em.

Both roads have plenty of twists and turns that make em quite enjoyable though, not to mention the scenery. I like some speed but I also like to take in the environment as well so I'm content with taking my time when stuck behind some other cars.

PS: let me know when you want to scout it out for your self, I'll meet you there :P

Yup, all the way to Stewarts point.

Fun road for sure! Great Choice! Stop by Tomales Bay Oyster Farm for some fresh Oyster (Raw or cooked).

It looks like the ft86 meet-ups are much more frequent and adventurous than what I've found in snowy central New York. I hope to check out the bay area landscape and take advantage of the weather. I'll keep checking this thread for possible drives when the time gets closer, and if there are any other relevant threads to follow for the bay area, let me know! thanks

I also moved to Fremont not to long ago. I also came from the east coast, namely Norfolk VA. The Model S and the 86 is in their natural territory in the Bay Area.

Sounds fun, but I'm in Vegas.. a little far :). Hope others can go.

So it looks like I am going to be free on Sunday Jan 12 and so I think I'll go for a mountain drive. Anybody wanna join me? Possible routes I am considering...

- Hwy 130 to Mt. Hamilton
- Hwy 84/35/Pescadero with a little bit of Hwy 1
- Hwy 9 down to Santa Cruz

let me know if interested, we would head out in the morning and probably end somewhere we can stop for lunch.

I might be down, it's been too long since I've been on a drive. Any of those routes sound good to me, most likely mt hammy or Santa Cruz would be nice since I've done the pescadero drive so much.

Clipdat 01-09-2014 05:14 PM

I got tired of commuting with this high octane gas, so I used my lunch hour to drive down Pinehurst and back today. It was completely open with no slow cars in front of me holding me back! Absolutely amazing!

But, but... the giant bear claws and cinnamon rolls at Pescadero ...

I'd be down for a Sunday morning drive, but I can't commit. Going to a friends wedding on Sat and I'm not sure if I'll be 100% (ie hungover) Sunday morning ;)

LOL understandable. OK well it sounds like we have you and Chris as maybes. So by tomorrow I will pick a route and meeting point and post it up. May not be a super early morning start since with the colder mornings it's getting harder to wake up early and get out of the nice warm bed haha.

PMok 01-10-2014 02:11 PM

well I did a coin toss to decide and the winner was...

Hwy 9!

I was thinking meet up at 10AM and roll out from here:

Peet's Coffee
1330 El Paseo de Saratoga
San Jose, CA 95130

Let me know if anyone will make it out for sure! Otherwise I will probably sip my hot beverage, wait till about 10:15 and then go driving!

Clipdat 01-10-2014 02:30 PM

I would enjoy coming out for this since I've only done hw9 once or twice (and never in the fr-s), but I don't know if I can motivate to be ready to leave Alameda at 9am. :/

here's some motivational video for you.

It's true, there's no Hwy 9 footage in that vid, but the message is the same. :)

Live 2 miles away from that Peet's so I'm in :burnrubber:

lol, This was the chain of events: watched the video, looked familiar, not surprised, I've driven hwy 9 before, thought "wait a minute, this is the drive I led, mt. tam!", then thought to myself "or was it mt. ham? nope, pretty sure its mt. tam", then "I didn't know hwy 9 went all the way up there, damn, that's a looong drive but might be worth it", then read your caption, "ooooooooooh doh! :bonk:"

Cjymiller 01-10-2014 03:39 PM

Well if you're coming out this way to saratoga I'll plan on joining.

We really need to do a Mt. Tam drive again, that was a blast, especially the rally stage-esque road leading up to the wonderful view of the bay.

Hwy 9 south towards Santa Cruz. At Felton we take a little detour onto some fun little side roads that will take us out to the coast, then we cruise down into Santa Cruz. There we will stop at a parking lot and from there decide what to do next... we could go grab food nearby, split our separate ways, go to the beach boardwalk or wharf, or continue more driving back towards home.

If anyone knows of good lunch spot in SC I'm open to suggestions.

Time for this drive is probably about 1.5 hrs which if we depart around 10:30 should drop us in SC right around lunch time. :)

If you have radios (walkie talkies), bring them!

M&M_Hwy9 01-11-2014 05:08 PM

Hey, we're into this. Easy access lunch option may be Upper Crust Pizza on Mission, just as you're getting back into Santa Cruz - they should have enough parking around back. It would be cool if we could all do a detour onto West Cliff, maybe sneak into Natural Bridges 20min (free) lot for a group pic. Looking forward to seeing y'all.

Rachey's FR-S 01-11-2014 08:45 PM

K. I'm gonna do it! I'll be the one waaaaaay behind the group so I don't hold anyone back hehe

PMok 01-11-2014 09:14 PM

I wasn't expecting it to rain today but it did up here where I am -- not sure if it rained down south around Hwy 9/Santa Cruz area or not. Seems to be clearing up now here but it's possible the roadways will still be damp. We will run rain or shine tomorrow, but obviously taking into account the conditions of the road, our pace will be likely slower than some of you regulars have seen. Let's just take it easy, enjoy the scenery and call it a fun group cruise... don't want to add to the "injured" list of 86s I've already been hearing about around the nation. Think of it as a preview run of a very cool route that we can run again later, when the conditions are ideal.

Clipdat 01-11-2014 11:10 PM

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make the drive tomorrow. :(

Have a good time without me, take lots of pics and video please!

mkivsoopra 01-11-2014 11:41 PM

I'll be there if I can wake up on time. :)

Pwolf 01-12-2014 12:09 PM

Wish I could join you guys but I have to be somewhere at noon, boooo. Stay safe and I'll be looking forward to pictures.

PandaBRZ 01-12-2014 12:11 PM

I'll join you guys today. I think it's time I stopped lurking and made it out to an event. :-P

We had a great first DRIVE of the year today, with 11 cars joining us on a fun drive through the twisties. Thanks to everyone who came out, hope everyone made it home safe and sound.

I'm still working on the writeup but here are a few pics to give you a sneak preview!

OMG they sounded so good when they fired up and roared off.

mkivsoopra 01-13-2014 01:57 AM

I went home, installed those subframe bushings, then went for a Mt Hamilton run. Hahahah

BigFatFlip 01-13-2014 02:18 AM

Awesome pics! Looked like a good time, couldn't make it, too much work to be done at home...boooo

PandaBRZ 01-13-2014 02:33 PM

It was great meeting everyone who came to yesterday's drive! I'm terrible with names so please forgive me if I don't remember at the next meet.
