There, I changed the link. Hopefully it works now. Also it was fun following you(or chasing lol) on Palomares to 84 @MyRx

Lol advantages of riding a bike I suppose - gotten used to the speed and learned to always look ahead. Back in the days the residents would dirty up Palomares road so it wasn't a fav for motorcyclists. Definitely a change now since the bicyclists have taken over that one. But def a fun blast thru it today. Thank you for the chase :)

Great drive today, especially for as big of a group as we had.

Thanks everyone for the pics and video and I like our track record so far. Let's continue to keep safety as the #1 priority for future drives.

Like Plato said during the driver's meeting, we want to establish a good reputation.

SC David 04-14-2013 01:49 PM

Doing a small last minute meet Peets at 435 Railroad Ave, Danville, CA 94526 if anyone cares to come out. Be there at 10:15-10:45 probably, then going on a drive. Post here if you want to join and we'll wait up!

Damn, would love to join ya, but doing my "husbandly" duties now, after playing all day yesterday (morning drive+A's game). Next time I guess...:(

SC David 04-14-2013 02:38 PM

Taking off on a drive now. Catch you guys next time!

PMok 04-14-2013 06:20 PM

Bummer, I would have liked to join you David but had other stuff come up.

Fellow DRIVE junkies, would like your input. For the April 27 big meet JR has asked me to plan the route for the cruise. Obviously Mines Rd is the main part but not sure how far we should go. Assuming we get similar turnout or more than the last Nov meet we are talking a train of 35+ cars. So the usual stopping points like the Junction and Lick Observatory may not accommodate so many cars. Any thoughts or ideas?

My thoughts about the options are:
1) full route up Mt Hamilton and down to SJ (about 70 miles)
2) stop at Junction or observatory and go back down same way back towards Livermore
3) at Junction take Del Puerto out towards 5 (I personally don't care for this road too narrow and dirty/bumpy)

I want to do another recon drive soon but from memory there are not really many good stopping points where we can have a large group photo. Would prefer not to do something obnoxious like block a part of the 2 lane road to line everyone up.

And it might make sense to break up into several smaller groups or squads each with a leader and tail car with radios. But I am open to discussion...

Clipdat 04-14-2013 10:15 PM

Up to Mt. Ham would be awesome.

PMok 04-15-2013 02:25 AM

here's the tentative route. if the group is too large I'm inclined to just drive past the 2 stopping points and say, if anyone needs a bathroom break they can pull off but the group will continue on since there won't be room to park everyone. end point is a shopping center in SJ that should have plenty of parking for us to gather and people can then split or make other plans.

^^^ that looks fun. I'll ask my cousin to bump her wedding haha

I'm in for a recon. This Saturday perhaps? Not so early for me since I have to drop the kids someplace or bring them if we have others come along. I just cruise then.

Bach415 04-15-2013 03:07 PM

My cousin and I are planing a drive this Saturday. It will start from Daly City and might end in San Jose. Anyone up for it? We will meet at Starbucks in Daly City, near Serramonte(where PetSmart is) around 9:30-10:00. Then from there we will go to highway 35 then down Sharp Park to highway 1 then up 92 to 35. Lunch break @ Alice's around 12-1. Then down highway 35 to 84 then back to 1 and end up back at Serramonte/Starbucks.

Edit: Cancelled

Sweet, thanks for these pics. Hope your gf doesn't mind if I use her rolling shot of my car for my new avatar! :party0030:

Was fun driving over with you guys, especially when we got in formation on the bridge. Haha would pay to see people's reactions to a 3 lane-wide lineup of our FR-S/BRZs.

Also just a fun drive overall, glad we're all getting to know each other's driving style and keeping it safe overall. Bummer I couldn't continue on to the Wheeldude meet, sounds like that was a good time. Can't wait for our next big meetup/drive/BBQ thing!

That looks fun - I've driven from B to A a few times. Just have to be careful of the cops (shouldn't drive too fast anyway) on the straights, and don't fall off the cliff on the high-elevation turns.

yeah I'm familiar with the route and the hazards, but I'm worried about taking a large group through there. Most of the drivers will be unfamiliar with the route and I bet there will be many inexperienced drivers who want to participate. Doing the full route might be asking for trouble. I can warn and shout all I want at the driver's meeting but I am certain someone will tune me out and not even hear half of what I say, then jump in their car and think they are Initial D drift heroes.

I'm pretty sure that like the last time, the organizers will ask everyone to sign a waiver that releases the organizers from any liability should anything unfortunate happen during the event or the drive. I thought it was kind of comical the first time I saw that, but now that I've agreed to help plan this drive I am starting to think it's a great idea. Nonetheless we want to make sure that safety is the first priority, and having fun is the second priority.

I hear ya man, I had the same reservations when I planned the drive for the previous bbq. Mine's rd. is almost worse since the road is much tighter (no epic u-turns on this one ;)). Let me know what I can do to help, I'm semi-familiar with the route, so I could lead or tail, which ever is needed. Let me know when you do the recon run, would love to join if I could.

86_ZN6 04-15-2013 05:23 PM

plato and bryan, you two should be the head organizers of the route for mines rd route.

and yes waivers will be signed again to release liability.

finch1750 04-16-2013 01:09 PM

I drove B to A a few months back when these ideas just came up, and I think continuing to Mt Hammy is a bad idea imo. When Iclub threads for BAM start about Mt Hamilton, the immediate response is "dibs on brembos". While we dont have to deal with kids thinking they are awd invincible, we do have the Takumi complex mentioned before.

I know we have a lot of south bay peeps that will take it anyway, but I think the official route should end at the junction to help limit liability along with the waivers. The central valley people will split a different way anyway and some may not feel comfortable taking the rest of it with a large group or at all, but may feel slight pressure to not seem to wuss out with such a large group.

Im busy all weekend or I would volunteer to help with the recon at least (unless you all do a midweek afterwork drive, then msg me.)

Yeah, thanks Finch, I had the same concerns. P and I are still hashing it out and the recon will give us a better idea. I did think of your idea as an option, with cencal folks heading east, south bay heading towards Mt. Ham and SF/North/east bay heading back up Mines. We're also planning on breaking it up to smaller groups with a staggered start. Unfortunately/fortunately, with the current small number of folks registered, we might be able to get away with just a couple of small groups.

Staggered starts would be a good idea (if the sign ups increase). It would be very helpful to have anyone leading a group do the recon drive. And test the range of two ways in the terrain would be helpful I would think to see how far back/ahead you could radio a different group.

PMok 04-16-2013 03:10 PM

great suggestions and points, finch. I do think it is more conservative to just end the drive at Junction and let people go their own way after that. However if we are doing staggered starts we will have to be careful in the timing, would be a bit messy if some groups are heading back towards Livermore from the Junction at the same time another group is coming down from Lake Del Valle. Guess the East Bay group should roll out last.

BigFatFlip 04-16-2013 03:47 PM

hmm... you're right. I like the idea of organizing the run groups by final destination. I'm worried though, don't think there's much room to park/gather for a stop before break up. Maybe we should call the Junction and give them a heads up?

finch1750 04-16-2013 04:07 PM

awesome idea for the run groups there P

I don't think we can ask/expect much from the Junction, seeing as we are not planning to stop and have lunch there or anything like that. More like just a brief rest stop or turnaround point. I think if we have like 10 cars or less in a group we could gather around those mailboxes off of Del Puerto Cyn Rd like we did for our Dawn Patrol photo shoot. :) I've seen other biker groups gather there too.

Is there a semi-meet this weekend to scout the drive and try the radios? I'd be up for Saturday or Sunday mid-morning.. or I could try waking up before 8? :iono:

overlookedx 04-17-2013 12:08 AM

I was thinking of buying some two way radios myself, just for the drives and whatever. I could also help with the big bbq drive if there's any need. Any suggestions for brands/types of radios?

I picked up a couple of mid model Cobra 2-ways from walmart for like 35. they have worked good so far

BigFatFlip 04-17-2013 01:21 AM

Yeah, was looking at the cobras on amazon as well, seems to be pretty popular.

PMok 04-17-2013 03:21 AM

yeah the ones I have been using are Cobra. But any radio that supports the FRS frequencies should work, however I'm sure the more expensive ones will have a little better transmission/reception. FYI I have been using channel 6 - as you get into the higher channels not every radio supports them. There are also ones that support subchannels like 6.1 6.2 etc. but I tend to use the main channels because it's easier and more people will have radios that support them. The downside is that the lower/simpler channels are popular and you will get cross talk in busy areas... probably not so much a problem on our back roads though. :)

I am thinking a scouting run on Saturday afternoon, around the same time that we would be doing the run on the 27th. roughly 2-3pm. Would prefer to not have it be a big group though, as it is meant to be a scouting run and I may stop sporadically to check for stopping points or photo locations etc. Everyone will get to drive it on the meet day soon enough. :) Those of you interested in helping be a lead or tail car on the 27th, are welcome to join me though and it would be best if you had a radio though not required. :)

finch1750 04-17-2013 03:56 AM

Yeah, I have the subchannels on mine, but a lot of people dont have them. For the price and the bit extra range it came with though I figured better to have it and not ise them often than not be able to at all

JohnAyySays 04-17-2013 04:01 AM

If you've got it, use it. I woulda jumped my pants if you had suddenly joined it lol. I kinda like the ones with a headpiece option.

Radio idea is great. I've looked for my pair so a buddy must still have mine (long ago). Time for a new pair.

Funny, those are the ones that I was looking at. Where'd you get yours? Any complaints?
