yeah, same way with Patterson pass, Tesla Rd. is much wider.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of fun to be had if you take it easy and are mindful of the possibility of oncoming traffic in each blind corner. Another really cool road nearby is Felter to Sierra Rd. There is a part that is super scary because it's narrow one lane road with steep cliff dropoffs on one side. But the view up there is amazing as you come down into San Jose.

Although there are some great curves and scenery, the road is really narrow (for 2-way traffic) in some places and there are lots of blind corners. So you can't push the car hard without being considered reckless... There are better roads in the East Bay, like Redwood/Pinehurst, Palomares, Mines.

Yeah I used to take Calaveras (doesn't it mean something evil in Spanish btw, I remember my GF telling me that when I mentioned that I was taking it home) home everyday when I lived in the East Bay to avoid the 680 traffic. Luckily at that time there weren't many people going the other way, so it minimized the amount of close calls on blind corners. But still, I never found myself pushing too hard cause its basically a one lane road where every corner is a blind corner, and being a few feet away from most certain death down the side of a mountain is scary as shit! Can't imagine a caravan of 8 cars trying to drive that road!

As far as this weekend's drive... I'm down for Saturday or Sunday morning. Would prefer Saturday though.

Awesome shots @PMok!

I am probably up for another drive this Sat...

Edit: Or Friday, since I took the entire day off work! :D

Ohh, a drive that's close by me. Very enticing. Please please please!

Clipdat 03-19-2013 03:11 PM

^ This. Especially since they're going to be closing it soon and opening the tunnels.

I think "calavera" means "skull" or something (not Mexican, just grew up in Stockton, lol)

I might be able to do this Sat morning, depending on what time we do this. If its early enough, I can since I might need to get back by 9 or so. You Alameda folks want to caravan again?

Kamakanani0 03-19-2013 04:28 PM

@BigFatFlip oh yeah , I just gotta be back before 5pm lol

Heh, I certainly don't mind letting someone else plan the route and lead the way. I can take a break from staring at maps looking for turnouts and vista points. :)

Let's do it! Sounds like Saturday morning is best for most of us? Pick a time and place and I'll be there!

Let's meet Saturday 7:30 AM at the Starbucks at 1227 Linda Mar Shopping Center, Pacifica, CA. Depart at 7:45AM. How's that sound to everyone?

The route will take us down Hwy 1 through Devils Grade, and we'll do some back roads and end at Page Mill Rd and Hwy 280, near Palo Alto. I'll go over specifics and hopefully have some maps to hand out day of. The route I'm hoping to do will have some very twisty sections, and there will be bumpy sections which are going to be fine for cars on stock suspension and moderately lowered cars, but slammed cars will have trouble. If we get more than 6 cars, I'll plan another route that will start and end at the same place, but be more hospitable to a larger group.

Sweet, I am so down for this. Nothing better than a meet 15 mins from me. I've been commuting to Palo Alto for a few months, and there's a few back roads on my way home that I've been exploring. Can't wait to see what route you've come up with.

PMok 03-19-2013 08:39 PM

sounds good to me... I used to work off of 280 and I miss having the great roads nearby, always great for a long drive home.
