225/45/18 Bad Idea?

I've been thinking about putting 225/45/18 tires on my daily driver wheels. The benefit I think would be more tire to take impact of potholes, filling in the wheel gap (cosmetics), as well as lower cruising RPM (less noise, save gas)

The disadvantages are slightly higher tire weight, less acceleration, and a 5.2% diameter difference with the stock size which will cause a 3.2 mph speedometer difference at 60 mph.

I plan on buying an eibach pro spring kit. Does anyone have a feel whether or not I will have rub issues with something like a 18x8.75 +35 wheel and 225/45/18 tire?

wanted to get the community's opinion on the matter. Thanks all!

I don't know for sure, but I doubt you'll rubb with XXR's and on the pro-kit drop

I have 18/8.5 inch rims and will be putting 225 40 18's on. Raises the car about 9 mm so not much of a concern. I believe the 45's add 19 mm. I don't see that as an issue with you lowering your car. The only thing I have read as a potential challenge is they might stretch a bit too much on the rim itself. No rubbing issues at all. Tires have been the most difficult decision I have made with the car, good luck with your decision. Suggest the "will this fit " section of the Wheels tires and spacers section for furhter guidance. Very helpful.

Thanks for the advise.

Do you guys think that there would be any harm in running 45 profile tire with 18 inch wheels other then speedo being off and possible fitment issues?

Other than raising the car a little too much I don't see a problem 225-40 or 245-35's gets you to within 2% of OEM tire. And from what I have read the ride quality is fine.

Thanks for your input :thanks:

For street use I plan to go with an "off-bran" wheel manufacturer probably XXRs, so I don't know how much I trust them with handling potholes. That's my primary reason for going with 45...adding a little more rubber to make sure I don't end up with a damaged wheel.

If you would like to see a vehicle with the tire you like, it can be found in the wheels, tires and spacers section, go to "will this fit." Front wheel size chart and go to the green box in the 18-8.5 wheel size with the 45 offset. Your size of tire is there. Blue BRZ

I have 225/45/18 with 1inch drop Tein H techs and is fine it fills in the wheel wells and you get a nice ride Especially for winter driving. :burnrubber:

The speedo will be about 5% over with the stock tyres so it should be spot on with those tyres.
It will drop the revs by 150rpm at 70mph cruising to help with fuel consumption but raise the gearing for acceleration to suffer a bit. They always say you can't detect an extra 5% of power so you probably wont notice it on the road.
It will fill out the wheel arches evenly and look better with a small drop.

Sounds good to me.

You should be fine I'm on 225/40/18 with hotchkis 1" drop

proficience 02-23-2013 08:03 AM

I'm on 225/40/18... not even noticeably firmer than stock - no need for 45 profile

Good to know. Have you had to so any kind of camber re-alignment after your 1in drop to make sure nothing rubs?

At the moment yes - but I am getting my Eibach sportline springs in soon. I don't have any concerns with ride comfort judging by other peoples experience with the same setup
