I can't get my FR-S! :'(
 

I can't get my Scion FR-S because I have to pay for college. Unfortunately I don't have rich parents and the University of Dayton is almost $30,000 a year. It was either get my Engineering Degree at another university :bellyroll:or get the FR-S. This Sucks :'( :iono:
I really wanted this car but sadly Engineering is more important. I'm pissed.

No cheaper state college you could go to? Just study hard, get good grades, learn a lot and then get a good job after you graduate. Then get the car you want. Need for a new car in college when you will be busy studying. Just get a more practical car until you have money for the FRS.

You drive a 2004 Passat and you can't get rwd and excellent handling? Trade in your car for a '00 Honda S2000 or a 99-05 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Want rear seats? Trade in for a '04 Mazda RX-8 or '98 Nissan 240SX.

And if you really want to pay for college, get a real old 240sx or miata from the early 90s. Or just keep your Passat.

In the same boat, although in Canada. Costs me about 15k/year with rent, tuition and food. But working off in the summer and next year my coop term starts (Finally decent money :D). Parents are paying for this year. Overall I guess I'll have to wait at least another 1.5 years after this car gets sold here. Buying used for sure (Hoping to get it around 18-20k by then, and importing from the states most likely).

Live through it, study hard, aim for that high GPA, get scholarships to help you out with that student loan. Priorities first, if a car is first then get them checked.

just think of how happy you'll be when you get the (insert future version) type of the fr-s! and you won't be living off cheap food while you drive it!

University of Akron=Not Good Engineering School and that's the same for University of Toledo and Ohio University and Cleveland State. They're not good engineering schools.

Teach her to drive manual transmission and have her trade in for the S2000. She'll be the envy of everyone, myself included.

In all seriousness though, an older 240SX (91-93) or Miata (99-01) make more financial sense if you're really insisting on a rwd car with great handling. Those early 2nd gen miatas (99-01) prices dropped like rocks. But they're built like rocks too. I'll bet you could find one for less than $5k.

So how much for an older 240sx?

Get 2nd generation FR-S.

I believe they will. Or you can get the last year model.

Like a few people said. Could you try a slightly cheaper school? Mississippi State University is where I went (definitely not as costly), and they offer several great (and very well known and respected) engineering programs. It'd be out of state for you but maybe you can pull something off to waive the out of state tuition (it's very possible). Just an idea... There are plenty of schools out there to look into.

$30k is a lot but student loans can be handled differently. Expect big school bills to pay once you're out of college, but then you'll have that engineering degree :D

Get you a job during school, save up, make a good down payment and maybe in a year or two you will be able to afford a used FR-S (or new)

It depends on your area so try to do some searches on autotrader, craigslist and cars.com. Here's what its like in my area:

89-93 (S13) will run about $500 to $3000.
95-96 (S14) will run about $4000 to $6000.
97-98 (S14) will run about $7000 to $10000.

Add about $3000-$5000 if its got an SR20DET engine swap. Manual transmissions will go for about $1000 more than automatics.

240SXs are a bit over-priced because of their popularity in the drift scene. But if you're patient and keep checking places like autotrader, cars.com, craigslist and forums, you could get a really great deal. Especially if they don't know how popular the car is.

just kidding. good luck at school and dont venture to far. you will get one eventually. or perhaps other car companies will realize that there is a massive market for car enthusiast cars and make some that you like better in 4 years.

and by being patient, you even wait until you get into school. There are a lot of kids who are interested in cars too. join clubs, maybe you'll make good(or rich) friends who are looking to sell car quickly and easily. Its also cool to have friends who know people or places that can get you good deals when it comes to aftermarket/maintenance.

They are called scholarships. I went to a well respected engineering school and it only cost about 1500 per year. I just graduated this week with two degrees (mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering). Now I'm going to get paid to get my Masters degree. During the past four years I had at least two jobs ( at one point I had three) while doing 15-19 hours of class. I have no student loans. Moral of the story: if you want something, you have to work for it. Also, engineering is a tough major. I teach math classes as one of my jobs and I get students every semester who are pre-engineering that I know will never make it. Im not saying you won't, but college is nothing like high school and teachers will fail you for fun.

Not sure if serious but if you are, hang in there bud. I just finished my Masters degree (at the University of Edinburgh) and had to find a way to finance everything myself, as well. It isn't cheap but definitely worth it in the end and the toys will always be there. I'm guessing you're 18, christ, in four years the FR-S will still be around and there will likely be even better/cooler options.

I remember in High School and Undergrad, I was really jealous of the kids who either had rich parents pay for their car or friends who worked straight out of HS that bought their own cool car [yet still lived at home :iono:].. and trust me, it seemed like EVERYBODY had a cool car except me. I worked part time and got some lucky breaks on scholarships so I bought some old, used cheap toys.. I went through a couple different older motorcycles, karting lessons, a trip to Europe, and eventually bought a used high mileage NB miata to satisfy my boy racer side.

Do well in school, your GPA and graduating with any type of awards/distinction are all that matter. If you can get into some type of internship program with a reputable company - DO IT. Or if you can get on any type of research programs/professor mentorships - DO IT. Relevant work experience is hard to come by, employers want to see people who have it already.

And if you REALLY need the FR-S and REALLY need to do the irresponsible thing then start saving now - work to get a downpayment together (~$5k), find someone to co-sign to get the best rate either thru Toyota or a credit union and make sure you can swing the part time job to cover payments without it affecting your studies.. and buy one! Financing $18k over 5 years isn't much (~$340/month) and you'll be building credit along the way. That's being incredibly optimistic and assuming the car will cost $23,000 OTD ;)

The car is still months away (up to half a year!?!) so don't freak out now. Work your butt off and make it happen - shoot for a $10k downpayment :D

Almost childish IMO. Instead of worrying about the FRS knock out that engineering program with a 4.0 and once you land a job in your field you can buy the car with ease instead of taking out a 30K student loan.

Fuck and in libya uni was free before the latest fiasco.. Hell they had a lot of good things there for people

They used to get free edu, then when graduate, if cant find a job, get payed the starting salary for their profession. Then when get married, get equivalent of 70-80k USD to start a house hold

Insurance is going to be crazy expensive on a FR-S for a 18 yeah old...just saying...but go for it bro if you can. Get one before everybody in the college has one!
