climate control swap possibility

Nigel recommended a installer who may be able to swap out the Climate control panels.

Name of place is Music Box
address is
626 N Durfree Ave # C
S. El Monte Ca 91733
626-823-2853

I talked to Tommy on phone and told him it would be impossible for me to bring my car in because i am in Ohio.

Long story short he said that the FRS may have correct wiriring do the panel swap since the US is only place the 86 doesnt have that option. He said that we wouldnt have dual but very could possibilty that he could get the panel to operate all basic functions.

So if there are any intersted FRS owners out there who want to give Tommy a call and who has a buddy who has a Limited BRZ he could take a look and let us know.

He told me he has done work to both cars however no one has approached him yet about the climate control.

Just an idea if anyone wants to give this guy a call he maybe able to shed some light on what would this would take. Again it wouldnt be dual but thats fine with me.

Take care guys

Interesting. I did some leg work on this subject and the BRZ limited and FRS have all the same plumbing and heater core. I couldn't seem to find the difference other than the harness and the main body ECU. Anyone else can shed some light on this?

I'm interested in doing this if we can figure it out!

im in the los angeles area and would be really interested in swapping out the plain climate control on my frs. but unfortunately i dont have a buddy with a brz

Thats what Tommy said. He said they are same car built in same factory and that all the stuff may be there already for it.

He would just have to pop them out to look behind both to see what would need to be done electronically and some other techinical terms regarding harnesses and stuff I really dont understand.

Bottom line is that it sounds more than likely that it is possible.

I am going to buy the Panel and have my buddy who is a master Tech from Toyota see if he can figure it out. However if its just a matter of buying a harness and programming I am 100 percent down.

Anyone near that area and California should check it out. I ll pm Nigel to see if he is able to let Tommy take a look at one if he has it in stock and all the would have to do is open up the FRS and we would take it from there.

I am going to try to contact a dealer in Aussie or if any Aussie members can recommend a good Toyota dealer to call I am sure there techs may be able to shed some light on what the difference is what parts besides the panel that we need. even if its not "Dual" and the panel works I am 100 percent swapping.

The Climate control on the BRZ ties into the main body harness. Which in turn connects into the body "integ unit assy". I just took my main body harness out (Its the big one under the dash. It has approximately 44 different connections on it. I also have my digital climate controls out now. here are some pics to help you getting started.

This is the back of the digital climate control unit. Only two Connections.

These are the Two Connections on the main body harness.

Any other questions I will do my best to answer.

Thanks for the pics brother.

First chance I get I will take my car up to Toyota and have my buddy pop off the panel and see what we have behind there.

I would do it myself but do not trust myself messing something up.

Thanks brother I will PM or post back on the thread as soon as I can get my car to Toyota to see what is under the dash and behind the panel

The FR-S doesn't have a connector that resembles that. The wiring may all be there, but I'm 99% certain it won't simply plug in. I have the entire dash out of my car, and unless there's a harness wrapped up in tape somewhere in there, it's not there.

The harness IS different. We are trying to figure out what else is different in order to make it work.

Does the FRS climate control use physical cables to manually control vents?

Yes it does. They plug directly into the knobs. They're the two white / black cables in the bottom left of that picture. When you twist a knob the black portion of the connector itself rotates.

Not really sure.

The guy Nigel put me on to said that worst case, you just wont have dual, and ability to change the actual temp, however if proper harness is there or avail for purchase the panel it self will function.

I hoping some of the Aussie guys could chime in possibly contact one of the Techs at there local dealerships so we can find out there answers

Mrqb22 02-19-2013 01:07 AM

sorry I didnt read post above mine before I posted.

So does this mean they have the same harness or same plugs that look similiar to the BRZ plugs for that climate panel?

I see, I know the BRZ has electronic actuators that turn the vents.

Based on our findings, Maybe one would need to do is...

Get the electronic vent actuators.
Get the connectors and wires that fit into the back of the Digital Climate control panel.

Then ingegrate the 2 new connectors and harness' into the main body harness so the main body edu/integ unit assy plays nice with the new Digital controls.
