What kind of gains without Turbo

So everyone is speculating about a boosted FRS/BRZ, or wondering the capabilities it has to being boosted out of the factory.

Now I have a different question,
If there is no turbo BRZ anytime soon, and we purchase the NA 200HP version. What modifications can be applied to achieve maximum gains (realistically) while keeping it naturally aspirated. What do you feel we can get this up to? I'm not too concerned with making it a high HP monster, that isn't the market i'm into, but I would like to see some post purchase gains if I was to buy, perhaps get it in the 250-260 range?

I would expect 220-230 max with bolt ons, and that's probably being generous.

With every bolt on and a tune expect around 15-25hp. I think you will go further with this car trying to remove a bit of weight in the wheels, suspension and exhaust than with trying to add a lot of power.

You can really get a lot out of a turbo car because you can increase the boost a little and then tune for that, with an N/A there's not a whole lot of power to be extracted from a small engine close to it's limits already.

Look just below a few threads

The main thing that bothers me:

What's a critical component in N/A tuning? The cams. The boxer has 4. N/A tuning might get a bit pricey with this car.

You're right, that's definitely going to hurt. Having never owned a vehicle with an opposed engine, how much work is it to change the cams in a car like that?

KaliKev 12-17-2011 12:14 AM

You really don't need that much. +20hp in this car is not the same as 20hp in a mustang...

Changing the sparkplugs in my cousins Subaru was a pain in the ass.. I can only imagine cams.

WTF do we have so many threads about tuning NA? If so many of us are interested in this, let us just make one upbuilding thread and contact aftermarket tuners.
