Getting the rear end to hook up with FI.
First off I know this is technically a suspension topic but it pretty much only applies to those of us who have started running FI. Basically I am looking for help setting up my car so that i can get better acceleration out of turns without the massive wheel spin that I am currently getting with only 250-260HP. I am sure letting some air out of the tires will gain some grip but i am looking for help setting up the rest of the car.
Just so you know what i am working with, I am running Nitto Invo's at 255/35/18 in the rear, with KW V3 suspension. I have adjustable lower control arms and the Whiteline subframe inserts as well. My goal is to have more predictable rear end behavior for track days that grants me more solid launches and powering out of corners. As it stands I lose the rear end in first and second gear easily just rolling on the throttle, as soon as I hit about 5k rpm the tires start spinning, and this is in a straight line, in turns it's much easier obviously. If anyone running FI has some setup pointers that i can use i would be greatly appreciative as i want to get this car into fighting shape for some upcoming track days! |
Most important thing with hooking is tires, you're gonna need to get a sticky tire. Next up is how the weight transfers to the rear, soft springs in the rear helps with the car " squating " and applying weight to the rear tires. Controls Arms will be a big help too. Lastly id get launch control and work on how to apply the throttle out of the whole.
Also this car weighs more in the front by about 4%. Id try to transfer that weight to the rear if at all possible. i.e. you can relocate the battery to the trunk to remove about 35lbs from the front and add it to the rear. Boost by gear will limit the power you make in 1st and 2nd which can help you hook. |
I feel your pain... But it sounds like you have a pretty decent setup if you have a fully adjustable rear suspension. Did you get the toe arms? Adjusting toe would also help. I'll be watching this thread..

Good luck mike, I'll be watching this thread for ideas as well.

With typer and your turbo onsets I would say your only bet after upgrading to R-comps/ultra max performance tires is to get fancy with boost by gear. Limit boost to 4-5 psi in 1st and 2nd.
Also note that on a racecourse you are never in 1st and rarely in 2nd. If you can modulate your throttle in 2nd then you are fine. A lot of people don't realize that smoother is faster. Stabbing the brakes and flooring the gas does not make for a fast track time. You don't want to unsettle the suspension with abrupt weight transfers. This is why many people do not like big turbos on the roadcourse (the boost kicking in like a freight train is undesirable). Predictable is fast. Control your car, don't let it control you. |
Tires I went with rs3's. they are sweet

If you're getting wheel hop or peg legging suspension setup might help. If you're just slipping both tires your gonna have to adjust your driving and/or tires.

This is the root of the argument towards AWD vs. RWD vs. FWD when racing. Especially at higher power levels, traction is always an issue with RWD and FWD vs. AWD when coming out of corners. There is probably nothing major you can do to alleviate that with settings, it's just a matter of going back to the slow in, throttle modulation, and exact exits out of the corners with the car straight as possible. Stickier tires will help, as will tuning to control partial throttle boost to help with hookup, but nothing will save it completely. Been a few cars I've tracked where I rarely got to full throttle them for more than a few seconds in long straights.

what are your alignment settings?
