Review: staggered setup, balance.
 

Hey all, just looking for feedback on staggered setups and how it effects your rides overall balance. Particularly from guys/gals who have been running this setup for awhile.

- What setup do you have
- Do you find it understeers/oversteers
- Overall enjoyment factor

I assume you're asking from a track perspective? For daily driving, staggered didn't change anything for me.

If we are talking about utilizing the staggered setup and running a wider tire in the rear than the front, then you are providing more grip to the rear tires than the front tires. It will create more understeer anyway you look at it.

Same here i would say going staggered improved my turn in response since i am using a narrower wheel and tire up front than i had used in the past but it could be the fact that its summer tire instead of an all season too. I wanted to run a 8"/9" setup instead of the more common 8.5/9.5 because i didn't want to have to put 255 or 265 tires on the rear, not enough power to need that much tire and i have a 9" rear on a 235/40R18 and it works out pretty well. It's a little stretched but handling is great on the street, don't have a track to test it.

Opinion on the stock mich up front on stock rims and 225/45/17 Mich Pilot Super Sports on 17x7.5 rims in the rear? Or should I just run the same all around

You should always run the same tires in the front and the rear.

Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem right now.
I'm running 17x7 wheels with 215-45-17 kumho ecsta pa31 up front and 17x8.25 wheels with the kumhos in the 225-45-17 size at the back.
I find it quite harder than before to rotate the car. I didn't think a 10 mm wider rear wheel would cause such an understeer-oriented behaviour. Now, I'm stuck with those wheels and I'd like to know what could solve my problem.
I'm thinking about getting same size tires for front and rear. Will that help?

Compared to stock; it may just be the improvement in the tires. New tires would provide much more grip, even in a square setup over the stock (slide happy) tires.

Yes. And if understeer is what you hate, i'd suggest putting 215 on back as well, not 225 on front. Too much grip of wider tyres and more grippy then stock prius tyres in this relatively underpowered car will make it go like on rails. It seems to me that it's not what you wished for.
But as previous poster said, even stock size but better grip tires of same size might be a bit of kill-joy. Yes, in grip driving they will perform beter and less understeer as your current staggered setup .. but is that what you want? There is a reason behind J.Clarkson quote ".. prius tires? .. Genious!" :)

I feel most people will have no idea what they're talking about.

Thank you a lot, I'll buy some 215s for the rear when I'm done shaving what's left on those 225s!
