ran into these on a thread in my other forum, i'm always super paranoid about my car getting damaged or being in an accident where the other party lies!!!!!! opinions?

I'm using a gopro as a dash cam currently. I chose the go-pro for several reasons:

1) I didn't want the dashcam to be in the car after I parked. I felt that the chances of me having someone break in to steal it were much higher than the chances of someone hitting my car and catching it on camera (plus, I always park nose in, so the camera wouldn't really record the accident)

2) I can use a gopro on a helmet and in other cars with pretty much no extra effort.

I bought 2 extra batteries, so the battery life hasn't been much of an issue.

I don't know if mine has the motion detection feature though but I think i have the photocell too. FYI the 6 IR LEDS are practically useless.

I bought a 500GW a few weeks ago and it works great. Make sure to get a Power Magic Pro with it though (still need to buy one for mine).

Oh and have a good virus scanner installed on your PC when you first plug in the MicroSD card. Mine flagged an autorun virus when I went to install the software on my PC. A quick format of the card and letting the dashcam rebuild the files on the card fixed that right up.

best part about the dashcam is you don't have to remember to turn it on, also if you just plug it into the cigarette lighter behind the glovebox it shuts off when you exit the car.

forget to turn the go pro on and you're screwed. go pro memory car fills up, you're screwed.

From that "reading material" link I posted, that's apparently a replica/clone/knock-off. Green lettering on the bottom indicates replica, where-as black lettering on a white background up on the top is a legitimate one. Difference being replica's don't record true 720p (interpolates 640x480 frames), and whatnot. Might be the reason the IR LEDs don't do much? Not knocking it, just pointing it out to other potential buyers.

I'm sure mine was a knockoff since the footage i've seen was definitely upscaled 720p, the mic is horrid, and it had a horrible beep which I disconnected. Totally worth the $25 price tag though.

I'm still not convinced the IR LEDS do anything. The night videos posted were in fairly lit areas. 6 LEDS isn't going to be wide enough nor powerful enough, but that's what headlights are for.

I'm eventually going to get a Blackvue soon though.
