should i change oil myself or let dealer do it?
 

I know there are threads talking about this but none is specific to the Toronto area. Cost to change oil in toronto is probably higher than US.

i'm debating if i should change oil myself or take it to the dealer? Which one is more cost effective and higher quality? I've never changed my own oil before. How much does it cost to change oil at the dealer?

The manual says it requires 5.5L of oil. A 1L bottle of 0w-20 Mobile1 at Canadian tire is $12, multiple by 5.5 is $66. Filter is $15, and i donno where to get the crush washer. So raw supply for each oil change after tax is about $90. and i don't know how much oil change cost at the dealership.

Any recommendations?

Read up on some DIY threads on how to change your oil. It's very simple. If you have any doubts, see if anybody local to you is willing to help for some pizza/beers.

If you're buying an OEM filter, the dealer will have the crush washer as well. Just remember to safely jack up the car, and to make sure to use jackstands.

yea i have read up on oil change. changing the oil is not my concern, but the cost.

I would call your local dealerships/quick change stations to get pricing and details on what types of motor oils they offer. You might end up with a cheaper price not doing it yourself, but with a less reputible oil brand.

cheaper and safer to do it yourself. Dealers and such have such a high turn over rate they don't really care as much about the car as you do. Mom's Lexus had the drain plug not tightened properly and my buddies S2000 had the fill cap fall off. I always do oil change myself.

Also on our car is super super easy as the filter IS right there beside the fill cap.

do the first oil change with the dealership so they have a service record with the car. it can help with warranty proposes. i don't know the technicalities associated with that statement so don't ask but i was told by my mechanic to always do first service with dealership or certified subaru shop

Lol, if you are worried about saving $ on an oil change it's obvious you do it yourself.

Do some research. You shouldn't be using crappy tire oil first of all.

That you have lifetime oil changes from the dealer?

Either way if you got confused with what they are giving you, I'd have the dealership do your first service.

When I called the dealer to check the parts cost vs them doing it the price difference was $17 to have them do it. I figured why not let for such a little difference.

lol note in that post, i said "life time change BUT I HAVE TO PAY FOR EACH", lol. that means i don't have free service.

hm... i'll ask how much oil change cost but i need to find a service center that i can trust.

Jokes aside, if it is true, than just pay for the service.

However I doubt it's true if he is posting this.

Edit: Service is $110-$120 for labour each hour. Oil Change is > 15 mins. I would say $20-40.

I had considered changing my oil just so I could experiment with one of the premium synthetics people talk about.

My concern was, if I do how then do I dispose of the oil? Seems more trouble than its worth when you have to bring the rebottled used oil to the hazardous materials recycling in the area. I'd just as soon pay the dealer $55. and be done with it.

your oil change is only $55?

if its free from the dealership and your car is under warranty do it there. I dont understand why anyone would chose to pay over free maintenance.
