Miata...too feminine?

I always hear people speaking the praises of the MX-5/ Miata on this forum.

I should know about the hype more than most as I actually sold Mazdas in '89 when the Miata hype first started, and believe me, there was hype. Anytime somebody saw one of those early roadsters parked people took a look, gawked, etc.

When I sold them I just knew this would be the kind of car a lot of people will bury away in barns/warehouses etc and there should probably be a decent supply of these for many years to come.

For me, despite the car having many attributes that the twins have I never considered buying one. It just LOOKS like a girl's car to me. Maybe it's just that bald guys hate convertibles??

Anyone else agree with me it is kinda feminine?

I bet the next gen model will still be slightly, but less so.

not feminine at all.

i've had ppl say to me this is a "gay man's" car. I don't mean any offense to anyone who has that orientation.

IMO though, it looks great. I can see that someone can it girly though. Either way, i think the car looks awesome and great. I wouldn't mind owning it in the future though.

Nah, it definitely has that reputation but the majority of Miatas I've seen are driven by dudes. Not sure why it got the reputation of a "hair-dresser's car" (as they said on Wheeler Dealers when they fixed one up). Just look at that movie Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character drives a Miata.

Girly or not, I seldom see women driving them.

Its always balding, middle-aged men.

I think most of the miata hate comes from how good they can be at autocross and road courses you always see tons of them out there and most if them do very well. The guys that spent $50k on a sports car don't like an old beat up miata to destroy their lap time but all they can say at that point is it looks like a chick car.

Im young so Im sure that factors into my opinion, but I wouldnt buy one. Even if you take the feminine tag away, its just not an attractive car to me.

Ive actually had people say that my FRS is/looks like a girls car. That boggled my mind.

Jasper- I didn't think there was "hate", just a slight objection to ownership because it just doesn't have that "manliness" to the styling found on many sportscars. Understandable since most sportscar drivers are male.

Actually I sold a blue hardtop one to Robert McCall, who was a Canadian Olympic bronze medalist in couples figure skating. Sadly, he had a weird vial sticking in his arm when I was dealing with and he passed away from AIDS-related complications 1.5 years later.

Two people who dont know anything about cars and just see it for the appearance, yes it will be perceived as a girls car. I love how they drive, but I would never own one, I also am not a fan of convertibles.

And where do you guys live? Two of my friends moms own Miatas, my own mom loves them, she thinks they're "cute and sporty", and I see women driving them about 80% of the time. I do know a guy who used to own one, and know a salesman at an aston dealer who owns one as a track day car, but they are definitely mostly female owned from what I can tell.

No, it's not. It is a badass platform that makes RWD accessible to the masses. This is not something a ladygirl-esk car could do:

ive owned one forever for a work car and whenever my 86 needed work.
blown shocks and dead tires and its still one of the funnest cars ive ever driven.

people who think miatas are feminine obviously have no idea what the car is.
a big go cart.

im going to start building one as a drift car within the next 6 months or so. its like the s chassis.... cheap parts.

Here is why the Miata has a less-than-masculine reputation: Mazda sold it that way.

Not sure why but I agree always seeemed like a girl car and I have never seen them in a different light. Its like v6 musnatgs to me always make me think a fat girl car.

i see more older aged men driving miatas then i do women..?
who wouldnt want a 50/50 weight dist. rwd roadster?
oh well. just leaves more for the rest of us.
