The more track (or even autocross) you do, the more you start realizing that the things you’re able to do on track aren’t even close to accessible safely on the public roads.

I recently left my 20s, but my mentality towards this has barely changed.

Agree 100% Once I went to the track I realized I was never pushing my cars to their limit on the street. And if I did im sure alot of people wouldnt be around to tell about

You live in a tame area for sure then. Where I live is practically the inverse, not to mention the influx of supercars here now that treat the main road by me as if a drag strip.

I kid you not, I often hear rolling races happening outside my house (think beep, beep, beep sort of stuff.. 1, 2, 3, go). It’s bad enough that I’m sour towards these people now because of how they ruin car enthusiasts reputation.

Needless to say, once warm weather hits, I get “challenged” to a race daily.

Problem is we got a lot of F1 drivers on the streets now, all they had to do was watch drive to survive and they became a master of driving, able to exceed the mechanical limits of their rusted Hyundai SUV and dominate CTRs that don’t even know the Hyundai exists.

I turned up at my local for a feed after a trackday,WRX hatch. The young bar maid asked about the car because it sounded and looks loud. I told her we race it and just got back from doing so. Her honest reply was " I`m probably a lot faster than you are" She has a older little KIA and has not had a drivers license 12 months. She really is a nice girl though.

I suppose, to be fair, I don't drive a lot of streets that are compatible with street racing. Too many Southern Sheriffs on the main roads that would be compatible. A lot of the streets also have speed cameras (which are legal here in school zones).

The area that Jordan would be driving is well know for the crowd that wants to race anything and not enough police coverage to do much about it.

Quite literally anything. From rusted shitboxes to ultra money Performante’s. I count 3 of those in the area now.. not sure what’s going on, but one of them is daily driven.

Their attempts to stop them so far; a road watch sign.

The most common thing I get are old crappy Neons with pop tunes and buzzing exhaust. They usually have broken parts of cheap body kits but often are just missing major pieces. Not sure where the hell they are even still finding these things!

about the only place I get any level of "come race me bro" is in front of Z1 Motorsports on my afternoon commute. But, if I'm honest, that's just the guys there leaving work and honing around with each other. I'm just in the traffic with them....

Pretty sure that this accounts for about 95% of the "dude wanted to race me" stories on here. Many of them that is just how they drive all the time and they probably don't even notice the car they are supposedly challenging.

I get someone beside me, usually a charger, mustang, or camaro, do something totally stupid trying to prove their car is fast, about 80% of the time I drive the Lotus. I ignore tgem, then they usually take of, dangerously weaving in traffic to again show me their car is fast. It's one reason a lot of lotus owners sell their cars. You get a lot of bad attention

RToyo86 05-20-2022 01:48 PM

There is definitely a sense of "race me bro" with these cars.

If I take the wife's Impreza people are always sleeping at traffic lights, or not paying attention.

In the 86 cars are always trying to out accelerate me from a stop or they pace me and speed up when I'm cruising around.
She brought it up more recently after I told her how people do that stuff around me constantly.

Looking pretty fresh if you ask me. I didn’t think neons were even in junkyards anymore, those things are more rare than huracans near me.

I want to add that I had my first autocross day at Limerock Park this past weekend and I was able to feel out the limits of my car and grip. I now drive a little more "spirited" on the road but I don't go nearly close to the limits I had at the track. Super fun experience and definitely recommend for everyone to try at least once.

Street Racing is a different story and is definitely more dangerous. I personally don't like challenging high-ego drivers.

soundman98 05-25-2022 12:25 AM

this past weekend, had the most most blatant run-in with a fiesta ST. driving home calmly, and through no effort/fault of my own, traffic shuffled and i ended up behind the guy. no big deal, had another 15 miles to go, no reason to change lanes. i just followed at a reasonable distance, same as every other car i followed up to that point. then he starts slowing down. traffic starts going around. finally he's going about 20mph under typical traffic, and close to 2 dozen cars had gone around him at this point, so i calmly shift lanes, never even downshift. he was apparently waiting for this opportunity to show me his pop tune. in full traffic with no more than 3 car lengths in front of him, he starts lunging past me, dropping back, and lunging forward again. normally, this would be perceived as a street racing invitation, but it was a 2 lane highway with nearly full weekend traffic. those 3 car lengths were as far as he could get...

Thanks now whenever I hear that I'm gonna call it the ping pong tune.

Leaving work, had a young guy on a Honda cbr600 get beside me waving his fingers to race dammit!! I'm on the phone with the wife and just shake my head no. He speeds off angrily. I was touched in a way that he thought my car was worth a challenge. First time any motorcyclist has tried to race me.

He most likely doesn't know what car he's looking at. Probably thinking it's a Ferrari or something.

I know this is like a 6 month old post, but the same thing happened to me way back pre pandemic. Except it was a Fiat 500 Abarth.

soundman98 11-20-2022 07:12 PM

Lol, almost forgot about that. With the new gen, almost no one notices me anymore

Happens to me 9 out of 10 times I drive the Lotus. Mostly mustangs, charger/challengers, but I've even had trucks here. I'm always just cruising the speed limit minding my own business, but they really want to show me their car is fast.

Last time my wife and I went on a drive, a guy in a 70's camero with different color fenders took off from a light (expressway, 3 lanes each side) and does the most dangerous moves between traffic to take off. My wife looks at me and says, "that was for us, huh..". I say yes shaking my head.

I do occasional get good. I guess I should mention those too. I understand it is a rare car, and people are interested. I had a guy in a GTR stop next to me and talk the other day. One of the best was a mini van with about 4 young teen boys. Mom was driving. It was on the freeway. They all had their phones out filming. They were egging me on to jump in it, so I downshifted a few gears and jumped on it. They were all smiles and thumbs up to me. I waved and took my exit. I did it safely; no one around.

Had a video recently go pretty viral on social media reaching around 10 million views. It was me painting my wheels with dish soap. Had a kid with a STI "build" which consisted of basic coilovers, wheels, and that was basically it. He decided to call my build, "Mid" which couldn't be further from the truth. It is mainly a drift car. Boosted, welded diff, angle kit, dual caliper setup w/sikky hydraulic handbrake, gutted interior, lexan windows, and the list goes on and on. Currently undergoing a K swap. I asked him which type of coils he had to which he replied, "BC's bro." I said, "Well I hope you got the swift spring upgrade with them?" He's like, "I told you they are BC's" Which instantly let me know he didn't even know what tf swift springs were. I explained to him that he can't call my build mid when I literally have better versions of parts that he has. Continues to talk all this shit on how slow my car was blah blah blah. He didn't live far fom me so I challenged him to a run. I said, "I can already see the title of the video now *Shit talking STI owner gets WALKED by a SLOW BRZ*" But he didn't want to run. Had every excuse in the book on why he couldn't run me when at the end of the day, he just didn't want to get beat by a brz. Something about losing to a BRZ hurts so many feelings and thats my favorite part about owning a boosted one. The amount of feelings this boosted k24 is going to hurt is going to be even better.

RToyo86 02-28-2023 10:34 AM

I had a fun run in with a STi on my commute home from work. Saw headlights appear rapidly from behind after exiting the highway. Had my skinny little winters screaming as I got the tail out on a roundabout and he was on my ass with loads more grip. Accelerated up around the speed limit and moved over expecting him to blow by but he seemed more amused and sort of just cruised around me after that
