"We had a vicious cycle which we needed to avoid. More power, a turbo, more weight, more cost... We called it the devil's circle."

This succinctly addresses one of the hugest complaints about this car. People who wish this car came with more power are indirectly asking for more weight and cost. There are plenty of other options for that already on the market.

"...they'd [Subaru] had a lot of problems with direct injection, problems which we [Toyota] had solved in our own systems."

"Subaru felt this one-upmanship very keenly, so they responded by trying to make it work to show that they, too, were capable engineers."

I'm wondering how Subaru PR would take this and surprised it got published. Sounds like Tada-san snuck some Toyota propaganda into this article with a sprinkle of arrogance lol. I always thought everyone was under Team 86. But now I'm realizing it might be because Toyota PR endorsed that. I knew Toyota/Subaru had a rivalry going but never knew how formalized it was with a "Team BRZ" rival name.

I dont think the actual engineers involved in the project had any sort of feelings of one upmanship at all. i believe the team worked in a very open and cohesive fashion.

Even the article pic suits some of the questionable propaganda going on in there. Just for lulz :D:

funny you should mention that, this particular boxer engine and chassis are remarkably similar to the rx7 FC.

We're reading the article from Toyota's POV, so it stands to reason there's some natural bias there.

I'm actually surprised at the lack of info we get from the Subaru side. It seems pretty clear that this mostly came into being due to Toyota's efforts, but that's mainly because there hasn't been any other story to counter that.

Interesting article, particularly the comments about Subaru being reluctant to proceed with the project, doubtful about direct injection, and generally being a cautious company. Would love to hear Subaru tell their side of the story.

Funny Tada speaks about the vicious cycle of more power equals more weight and ultimately less fuel efficient. Seems like he will need to change his perspective when it comes time to design the new Supra.

If this car had been designed be a committee, it would not be what it is. Be glad there was a "dictator" involved.

The 86 was developed under an ideal or a belief of his, going against the grain of the 'committee'. I think the new Supra has more support from said committee, because it will be a sports car that will boast Toyota technology and numbers to back it up. Simply, it is the sports car that a committee does not shun, because it will have the numbers to show and compare in benchmarks.

Subaru may have been right about the direct injection system, especially with the recent direct injection seal failures.
