you know, i've been watching the NSX closely since it was discontinued back in '05 and witnessing the few transformations it underwent in concept form before it was axed, and even those were pretty different from the original, but what they lacked in heritage they made up for in originality. but this car looks like a Japanese R8 knock off. lol, i'm not saying they've gotta go retro like the current '05-'09 Stang, but at least they could have made it look like an NSX instead of following the hype of the R8. but this is all subjective stuff, obviously. it's fun to respectfully disagree. hopefully they'll cook up something nice for all of us in '15.

speaking of which and from this years TAS show:

That is a Honda I like most of all. The V8 sounds like an F1 engine.

Art Center- you guessed right. some of the most well known car designers have emerged from there: Anders Warming (all over BMW- did the E84 Z4, now design cheif @ MINI), Ken Okuyama (designed the Ferrari Enzo), Chris Bangle, Henrik Fisker (Aston Martin Vantage, DB9, Fisker Karma, BMW Z8), J Mays (Ford design chief), Freeman Thomas (New Beetle, Audi TT, the first Chrysler LX cars, excluding the Challenger) and many many more GREATS. hey, if you're gonna say they're not all great i might as well name the greats. :D

As far as the heritage argument goes, i'd ask this question: how are icons made? no doubt they start from scratch somewhere but surely not by virtue of imitation. fact is this; it's all be done before, just room for new interpretation, and Acura had a really good point of reference that, for the most part, they completely abandoned. do you think Porsche will ever abandon the shape of the 911 or any of it's other models from which they're derived? or perhaps you might want to consider various Ferrari's, or Lamborghini's. some of those are considered to be some of the greatest designs in automotive history. it would be one thing if Acura were starting from scratch with an all new sports car, but as a follow up, IMO this car is a complete fail. the beauty of this whole dialogue is as the saying goes, "beauty is all in the eye of the beholder". enjoy your new NSX, however it turns out.

:happy0180:

This is just car guys talking car talk so please don't take offense!

You mentioned some great designers and also some very very controversial ones. The Z4 isn't exactly a pretty car. Then how about Bangle butt generations? I'd normally still cringe when I see an e60 BMW on the road if it wasn't for the fact I got so use to them. I can't honestly say the Enzo is a good looking car either. It's gangster as all heck but it's not exactly pretty. You forgot to mention Chip Foose btw! Yes, all the "greats" are on Art Center's wiki page for everyone to see. Unfortunately, design is subjective. No one is right or wrong...booooo or else we'd tell these guys to stop building ugly cars lol

Also, back on the topic of heritage... You bring up the NSX vs. the 911. Heritage implies lineage. It implies a continuation of an evolution of design. The 911 has had the luxury of continous improvement. There have been several generations of 911s. Now they have a heritage to protect. The NSX is a one hit wonder. What kind of heritage are you really trying to protect here? The only "heritage" it may have is that it was built for 15yrs which is forever in car years. I'm actually quite surprised they still named this new car the NSX. This is also coming from a current NSX owner so i'm completely in love with the original and rather uncontrollably biased :happyanim:

For the record, I think this car (NSX2.0) is beautiful. Yes, from a design perspective it's a little unfinished/messy but they have the main lines correct. I think the production version will be understated like the original.

I'm just hoping they come up with something groundbreaking since they continue to be on this tree-hugging kumbaya hybrid LSD trip of theirs.

Now how about a little photochop to wet your palletes!

There are so many arbitrary lines it makes my head hurt. The beak as someone mentioned before also looks terrible as well.

the original NSX is enough heritage for a new model to draw some level of inspiration from. for some time it was quite typical for the Japanese to design a car w/ a fresh look then by the time the next generation would roll around it would more or less be a derivative of something else already on the market from elsewhere(i.e. the second gen Lexus GS and the W210 MB E-class). this is what I believe is happening w/ the car in discussion. aside from that it is the most original or unique of designs that are most endearing over time. i look forward to watching how this concept develops over time if any at all.

what i believe is the one and only flattering shot of this new NSX, which also conceals the area of where the bulk of my beef lies w/ this car: the front end.

http://images.thecarconnection.com/l...00376797_l.jpg

if the design team @ Acura can work out the front end to be more coherent wit the rest of the car then perhaps i could learn to love it. as it is it's completely out of proportion and sync with the "flow" of the rest of the design. the beak has to go!!!

^^^ :bellyroll:

But yea those headlights...they don't fit! they are just a strip of LED, they need some more dimension to them.

Oh I just noticed the C pillar extensions...so they got someone who actually knows aerodynamics to design this? I hope this carries over...

poormans_LFA 01-31-2012 03:04 AM

believe it or not....this car is actually starting to grow on me in all of it's "newness".

That was a pretty funny commercial lol

99% of us on this board probably won't be able to afford one but I like it a lot! It might end up costing as much as a R8 5.2.

No, an R8 4.2.

Are you sure?

This car was 90k back in the 90's. 20 something years later I would think it would cost at least 60-70k more.

How much hertiage do you want! I sure as hell don't want to see those flip up headlights make a comeback; that shit can stay in the 90's!

Speak for yourself.

And technically flip-ups were all the rage in the 80's, died out during the 90's.

On-topic: With all the new electrical tech coming with this car, it will come down to weight if it wants to save face as a proper NSX. The original NSX was much akin to the Ferrari F40 imo, in that it was a supercar tailored to the fanatical driver...not overly crushed with luxaries, and as in the case of the Type R, basically a street legal race car.

Zaku 01-31-2012 06:44 PM

Hey... I like flipped lights...there's impractical but I like em :D
