The Scion FR-S will be the official vehicle of the 2013 Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race held at this year’s Long Beach Grand Prix. The sports car replaces the Scion tC coupe, which has been used in the annual race since 2005, to become the first rear-drive celebrity race car in 27 years. The modified Scion FR-S racer debuts at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

The race cars will be identically prepared, tuned to 210 hp with help from 100-octane racing fuel and TRD upgrades like a performance intake and stainless steel exhaust system. Other modifications include coilover shocks, a big brake kit with Hawk Performance brake pads, Centerforce single-disc racing clutch, and 18-inch TRD alloy wheels wheels wrapped in 225/40R18-size Bridgestone Potenza RE11 summer tires.

The race will take place Saturday, April 20 as part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend. A mix of celebrities and pro racers will compete for charity, benefiting children’s hospitals around the country. In the past, the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race has attracted names like George Lucas, Jay Leno, Keanu Reeves, Buzz Aldrin, and Tony Hawk. The last rear-drive car raced in the event was a third-generation Toyota Celica.

Though only half the cars will be driven by pros, the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race may be our closest look yet at what an FR-S spec series would look like.

So when can I buy one?

MannyO 02-07-2013 11:57 AM

There's something about that front end that just doesn't look quite right.

Tt3Sheppard 02-07-2013 11:58 AM

So you see it too? The turn signals are missing lol. I also wonder what channel this will be broadcasted on

No blinkers and plastic trim is changed...

Awesome, now I need to figure out a way to become famous so I can get in the race.

There appears to be a 5-point Simpson racing harness used with the stock seats. I wonder exactly how they did that? The rear of the harness appears attached to the roll bar just behind the seats. I assume that they put a bolt through the floor for the fifth belt.

Did they use the stock seat belt mounting locations for the lap belt?

Did they just thread these 3 inch belts through the center between the headrest supports? I wouldn't have thought they would fit.

Were these seats modified in any way, or do they still recline?

ZDan 02-07-2013 12:15 PM

Anybody else notice the driver's headrest angle?

Rampage 02-07-2013 12:16 PM

The race will be worth watching for a change.

Stock seats are FIA approved, and do not need to be changed for one make races.

Basically its a small prep race event most likely sanctioned by NASA, and theres are not a whole lot of regulations in preping a car for one make racing. Especially when all the cars must be modified similarly.

Harness Bars must be installed to vehicles, they usually run along the back end and are welded to the mainhoop of a 4 or 6pt roll cage, and they can be fed over the shoulder of the seat,

I would not mind having that livery on my car.

Also, that does not look like the TRD or Five:AD spoiler, I wonder what they are using...

stockysnail 02-07-2013 01:09 PM

Finally a car that's using the same summer tires as me. I was starting to think I don't have taste. ;)

Fog lights are replaced with a flat panel. If the panel were painted it might look pretty good. Drop and rim size looks great.
