Wondering if we got any programmers in the house?

A little bit about me. I actually graduated with a degree in economics and accounting but have been programming since high school. I worked in the finance/accounting industry for some odd years and actually began studying for the CPA exams until I realized that a life career in accounting just wasn't for me.

So I profusely got back into programming. Totally different world from accounting and economics, I can tell you that.

My parents think I'm nuts for leaving a world full of security to trade for one that's full of uncertainty but they do support me in my decisions, regardless.

I'm pretty sure there's plenty of security in programming....either that or I need to get out while I can. Run! All of you!

Currently doing C# wcf wpf xaml, windows front end stuff and some service work....well typical developer stuff. Been doing it for about 18 months now.

For a second there, I thought I was the only programmer here in this forum :D

How do you like it so far? I don't do see C#, but I've heard from other 'experts' that it's basically a rip-off of JS.

I don't program a whole lot. I took a few code monkey classes in college and couldn't get into it. Oddly enough, I don't mind coding web stuff. CSS, HTML, and whatnot. That was originally going to be my major - web design. Halfway through I had a change of heart and switched to Cisco networking. I picked up a bit of PHP, and a little bit of the easy mode Visual Basic .NET stuff, but that's about it.

I was playing around with HTML in high school and decided to go to college for Electrical and Computer engineering. After I graduated I quickly found out that you need a TON of experience to get anywhere in the field and found it hard to get an entry level job (also the pay was meh).

I wound up backing out of the electrical engineering field and went into software engineering. After working for both a small company and a huge conglomerate I now have my own consulting business building web and mobile applications. It's paying my very well thus far and I'm only in my late 20s. There's plenty of money to go around in this field - if you work hard, you'll get it.

I've worked with almost every programming language out there. Right now, I primarily work with web and mobile technologies (.NET, Java, Objective C, JavaScript).

Also, I would never compare C# to JavaScript. The syntax is very similar but JavaScript is not an OOP language. It certainly has come a long way though - I do a LOT of client side scripting with JavaScript (jQuery, jQuery Mobile, Base.js) and all those other framework goodies. I love how powerful JavaScript is, with the ability to prototype classes, you can create a pseudo OOP language with it. It's very flexible and fun to work with. I am a huge fan of JSON serialization and use it everywhere. For faster application response and large datasets I turn to Apache Thrift (which is simple and genius).

Good luck with your future endeavors. This is a great field to be in and I would probably say is more secure then accounting/finance.

Using ASP.NET and and VB right now

I'm an interactive designer, work mostly with HTML/CSS, JavaScript, I mess with actionscript/PHP/ASP when I can. Lately trying to learn C and get more into programming/apps.

I don't think HTML and CSS even belong in the same class as real programming languages lol. I mean there is some crossover but true programming I feel is way more involved (maybe its just because I've been doing HTML and CSS for so long and on a daily basis).

I recently bought objective c programming: the big nerd ranch guide by aaron hillegass and have been trying to read it and program in Xcode as much as I can. Any tips from the more advanced programmers?

Play with mostly some low-level stuffs, such as C, Verilog HDL, and assembly languages.

I do a ton of Perl, Python, and Bash shell at work (bit Linux shop). Current project is C based, however. It is nice to get back down the the low level grit every now and then.

I teach python for my Game Programming course and use the Pygame libraries do do all of the graphical work.

Pen tester here, I breaks yalls code

Full-time Ruby/Rails developer here. :)

Currently 3rd year comp sci student, taking Theory of Computation, Systems Programming (we use C for this class), and Computer Organization/ Combinational Logic

Previously I've taken a few Software Design courses (in java) and a data structures course all about dictionaries, lists, linked lists, etc. all in Java.

Hopefully ilk graduate in the next year so I can leave my retail job for a programming position

I do Natural Language Processing in almost exclusively Python. Currently working on trying to leverage Moses (a statistical machine translation system) to increase a translation memory system's pre-translation coverage.
