Speed Chime removal / adjustment
Guys,
Does anyone know how to remove or adjust the speed chime in an 86? Or any Toyota for that matter? Living in Dubai has its perks like 140km/h speed limits outside of town. Good on your drive to Abu Dhabi, crap if you have to listen to the chime all the way.... I would like to disable it completely or atleast change it to 140km/h. Any advise would be appreciated. Speed chime? Must not be in Usdm cars, been to 125mph and haven't heard anything yet.
|
I thought it's a JDM only thing? No chime on mine either.
|
Do you have the buzzer set to ON for your shift light? Is that the chime you are hearing?
I can't think of any other chime other then the door being open. |
I was in Japan working for a month and when we went out in buddysan's car it would chime at 100kmph iirc. It's a nanny to remind you to slow down. It must be in other markets too.
I don't know what it is, but there must be a fix for this. |
I'm thinking it's the RPM indicator chime. Check owners manual for that setting, which can be set to specific RPM and to ON/OFF. You're the first to report this chime and I'm sure there are loads of others who have had their cars as fast.
|
Guaranteed not RPM indicator as my 86 is the base model. All Toyota's in the Middle East have this. Constant beeping to tell me I am over 120km/h. Bloody irritating. Both my Sierra and the wife's Tahoe have the same but one chime only and then the display telling you you are overspeed.
Pretty sure it is a country or region setting just need to figure out how to change or switch it off. So any ideas? |
Would be annoying to have the chime on the race track. so only thing I can think of it to try turning TC off. Not really a good solution long term but the only thing I can think of at the moment. Try once with the button down for 5 secs and if that doesn't work try the pedal dance?
NZ model does not have this. European model doesn't have it either or we would have heard about it from the press. |
This is a mandate in UAE that all cars should have some sort of warning when you reach 120kph. In my wife's Dodge Caliber this would be one ring and them just an indicator in the dash. I have driven a Mitsu Lancer before and once it hits 120kph it would chime continuously until you reduce your speed. I guess Japanese make cars would be the same.
As far as I know you can have this disabled from garages that do modification. |
If anyone watched Initial D during the first season, once the AE86 reaches 100kph the chime would sound continuously. This is the same in UAE but set at 120kph. Some cars more annoyingly than others.

I have asked at the dealer about this and all I get is blank stares. They either do not understand what it is I am asking or just do not care.
Is there any way to change the "country" as set up in the car? |
GOT THE SAME THING,
JUST BOUGHT MY FT86 TRY IT OVER 180KM GOOD BUT THE NOISE IS ANNOYING |
You might check to see if the chime has a fuse all its own ..... if so, pull it......http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...mages/skep.gif

I'm just amazed that we don't have something similar or worse in the US.
|
I would think this is something that could be toggled on/off by the dealer using their programming equipment (techstream?). The problem is getting them to do it, or finding a tech who is savvy enough to figure it out. I had a '99 Ford Ranger that I bought as a demonstrator in 2000 and it did this...drove me nuts. I had 3 different dealers try to figure it out before one tech was able to find the right place in the programming to shut it off. I don't envy you...that was one of my most annoying automotive experiences ever.
|
I'm fairly sure this is something that can be changed with techstream. You can buy a cable online and download the software (I believe there is a link somewhere on the forums) and just change the option yourself. Although there is no guarantee that it is even configurable...

If you cant tell your speeding with the tach then you shouldn't be driving! |

I looked through the fuse box under the dash and in the bay and couldn't find anything helpful. It wouldn't be so bad if it started at 140kph, but 90% of my daily drive is 120kph. 20 minutes straight of *DING* *DING* *DING* is beyond annoying!
|
Kind of off topic but but maybe the speed chime is because of stuff like this?
How often does stuff like this really happen? Can't tell if its for real it looks like a highway of sorts but people are lined up and down watching. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZg2baj-VsU"]SAUDI car drifting video by ABRAR BHATTI - YouTube[/ame] |
Since Toyota has only one dealer in the UAE we are sh!t out of luck. They have come back and said it is required by law. Problem is my Tahoe makes one "ding" and that is it. My Z3 did not make any sound. Seems like Japanese cars keeps in "dinging", US cars makes one "ding" and European cars no sound.
So with the dealer being as useful as always (read useless) the next step is to take the instrument cluster apart and fin the little speaker and kill it. Seems like other Toyota's have it installed on the instrument cluster so it is the next logical place to start. I have bought and used the Techstream cable you can order from China but that is very limited. |

You wont believe the Sh!t with Toyota Dealer her they are the one who control the market as they told you ( it required by law ) I asked them then why its not in all of Toyota Cars ?? Why its just Beep for few second and stop in my other 2 Toyota Car ??? They Say Nothing and they Say Don't Know it's coming from SUBARU Like this ?? More over Do you know that Warranty Validity linked with the Service to be done with this Dealer ?? On Fact they charge Dh 1500 only for Oil Filter Change ?? for this car and when asked them they say we use oil from Japan for this Car ??? Need to ask is Japan oil Made of Gold to be Charged with this amount ???? They just rip your pocket >>>>> :bonk: Need to rise this thing to Customer Right in UAE . |
any idea if this still on 2015 model
any fix for this ? does the BRZ have the same problem ? |
Is there a Subaru dealer you can try in UAE? Maybe they're more helpful.

In my AE86, it has a chime like this. It comes on when I reach 105 km/h. It is a small box that is plugged to a harness. Looks more like a relay switch. The harness was located in the center console under the radio unit. Hope that gives you some kind of idea.

Wish I had the "speed chime" reminds me of Intial D. How do I get one!
|
I'm pretty sure if some chinese governmental bastard knows this kind of precious idea, they will put this regulation to the local vehicles in order to get more certificate fee from car owners and manufactures, but basically that's the consumers who will absorbs all the cost.
|
I have removed my chime by taking the instrument cluster apart and putting about 4 layers of ductape over it. It is barely audible now.
|
:laughabove::laughabove: thats one way of dealing with it

Nope, speaker is mounted on the pc board for the instrument cluster. |
I would be interested in seeing the board. De-solder it perhaps?
|
Turn on radio.
Turn up volume. Chime gone. |
