Performance upgrades, still on Warranty
Ok so I have been thinking about a performance upgrade for my 86 that will:
1. Improve performance 2. Be relatively well priced 3. Not void my Warranty (The not so easy part) I had a Corsa Turbo before my 86 and I remapped the ECU and the Opel didnt even notice, so warranty stayed as is. Now I'm thinking if this would work for the 86? And whether the power gain would be worth it. Anybody have any idea on this? or place to get the tuning done? Otherwise, any other alternatives?:iono: |
Uni-Q chip (removable) and bolt on Exhaust with Std tips (dealers unlikely to notice)
|
Before you go ahead and purchase chip and Exhaust, which I am told gets a additional 10 to 15 kw for R15k, i have a package just arrived from the States, which I have the Works DIF and Zeta silicone intake pipe.
There has been talk that these items could give an additional 10hp for a cost of under R1500 delivered to SA. Will have fitted and dyno tested by next week and provide feedback. These items will have no impact on warranties as it is pure drop in. I was at 888 performance yesterday, who has fitted 2 x 86 with turbos, taking performance up to 217kw, these test cars have done roughly 14000km with no problems to date. |
Yea Uni-Q chip could be a good option. I want to do abit more research into that sometime.
Thanks Ryan, let me know how the dyno goes on the new parts :) will be interested to see the results. Would you know how much the turbo upgrade costs? I spoke to RGM and they have a supercharger, exhaust and tuning package for around R80K (which might have changed by now).... Its all about weighing up how important the Warranty actually is versus a turbo or supercharger kit haha :bonk: |
Indicated roughly R68k....
I just could not spend that, as much as I love the 86, going over R400k mark a whole different range of cars become more attractive. don't care if a GTI beats me on a straight, that straight eventually turns..... And as I said to Sav the other day, any faster will get me into trouble..... Hoping the works filter and intake pipe gives the mid a boost as this is the only gripe I have with the car... |
@Ryan, I just realized that when u said "DIF" u meant "Drop In Filter" and not Differential
Sheesh, here I thought u where changing your DIFF |
"don't care if a GTI beats me on a straight, that straight eventually turns....." - Ryan86
Yea I agree, if we can find a mid range solution that would be awesome! |
Tuners claim that with a Uni-Q or EcuTek and enough time on the dyno, they can minimise it.

Check the response from the guys that have installed already... Unfortunately nobody has taken the dyno test and challenge as yet.. The comments are mid improvement and the sound the filter gives, almost replicating a super charger. I'm excited. I checked with Toyota, the ECU will automatically adjust settings to compensate for the additional air flow. Some guys have disconnected the battery for 2 mins which supposedly resets the ECU.... Not sure about that, so will take this into consideration during Dyno testing.. |
Independent dyno is the only way to reveal true gain via any mods done on the engine.

I'm hoping the 86 defies the laws of physics & such but in my experience it's very difficult to get any worthwhile gains out of a N/A engine without breaking the bank.
Usually exhaust+induction+software makes "some" difference but hardly worth the money. Turbo engine is a whole different story... |

Has yours arrived yet Ryan? How much was the shipping of the filter. |

99x9=891 plus shipping estimate $40 = 360 plus duties 120 so I guess to land at your door R1371. If you just take the filter take R250 off the price. I have the full kit which has just landed in JHB, will have it by Fri, so hoping to have dyno test by next week, so hang in until then. I also suggest chatting to the other guys as 86-ZN6 has really cool stuff that you could maybe do a combined purchase and share the shipping. |
