Rust? even with rust proofing?
 

Hey guys I saw this on my car the other night. Is that rust? or is that normal?

I got my car rust proofed.

and I have not gotten a chance to really check under the car yet to see if there is more.

that is definitely rust friend :( unfortunately rust proofing only goes onto the body of the car. Exhaust stuff doesn't get the treatment. Even if it did, it could melt or catch fire. That rusty coating on the exhaust bits is normal unfortunately. Chalk it up to road salt and moisture.

rust proofing materials can't stay on the exhaust system cause they are too hot.

that's why i keep on telling people rinse your car under carriage regularly, but for you, it's too late to do regular rinsing now. you'll just have to wait until the rust gets bad and change your exhaust.

now you got a good reason to get an aftermarket exhaust!

Don't feel bad. If you live in the rust belt even regular under-the-car rinsing will slow the rusting process down only for a short while.

Stock exhausts are almost always the first thing you end up having to replace from rust anyway. Just get a stainless aftermarket one to replace it.

Most stock exhaust these days contains stainless so lasts a looong time, not like the old days. I'd hope the 86 comes with at least most of the exhaust components in stainless.

Upgrade your exhaust or get some big tips installed to hide the exhaust cannister +)

If you're dead set on keeping the stock system,or want to protect an aftermarket system of unknown Stainless type, paint it.

Hit up your local autoparts store and get a rust stripper wheel and some engine paint. Remove the exhaust pieces you want to protect. Then use the wheel in your drill and strip/scuff the metal. Finally paint the exhaust according to directions.

Dunno if youd want to do this to your car but when tools and stuff rust in out shop we use something abrasive such as a high grit paper to scrub it off. Nothing too rough. Will probably leave light scratch marks but better than having rust on it
