It was a good run

so because life happens and being a college student, it can also be unexpected. but life bit me hard in the ass recently and i might have to give up my FRS which quite frankly eats me up inside. so 2 things

1. my car has 10,000 miles and was purchased in may. what is the depreciation? i also have about 2200 dollars in aftermarket parts. does that matter? i've paid about 4.5k of it off so how much will i be upside down.

2. what are some good cheaper (8k to 10k) cars that i can get in it's place that will maybe lessen the blow of losing it?

hopefully life will get allow me to keep my FRS but odds are low.

Pull the aftermarket parts and sell them separately you will not get any more for the car with them.

A used miata might hold you over, and lots of aftermarket stuff out there, its RWD and cheap on gas.

Tt3Sheppard 01-24-2013 05:43 PM

I would sell all the aftermarket on the forums. I think you should be ok in terms of selling/trading it in. $4k off the sticker will bring you somewhere around the $22k range.

From $8k-$10k I would recommend a 2006-2008 Honda Civic Si. Very close in power and very good handling. I would say its the FWD version of the FRS.

Cheap Miata or S2000 would be my choice in that price range.

OrbitalEllipses 01-24-2013 05:47 PM

KBB and NADA values aren't out; from asking prices on the forum and elsewhere it doesn't seem like people are taking huge hits. Who knows what buyers are actually paying and how fast sellers are able to get rid of the car. Your best bet is to take the mods off and sell them individually while listing the car privately unless you need a quick sale, in which case you could trade it in.

About the finances: I have no clue.

dsgerbc 01-24-2013 05:48 PM

Bummer. Good luck to you.
+1 on pulling aftermarket stuff and selling separately.

Miatas are fun/cheap/reliable. If you don't really need a solid roof, $8-$10k will get you a decent NB w/hardtop, or a higher-mileage NC.

If you need some interior space - that's another matter. Some fun FWD like RSX, maybe.

May we ask what happened? Maybe we can give advice that would allow you to keep it :)

I think it's safe to assume that having aftermarket parts will actually negatively impact the value of your car. People will assume that you drive/track your car on a regular basis. Sell the parts separately and install the factory parts.

i have never spent over 4000 on a miata and they (both) came with a hardtop. one was a 94 with 80k and the other was a 90 with 107k but crazy mint. the na miatas are so cheap that i decided not to buy the frs until i need backseats or my miata becomes a track only deal

Just a thought.. Pulling off all aftermarket parts and selling them would be best like everyone is saying.. That's about a grand or more..

Idk you situation, but selling your car and lets say getting what you owe.. Where is the 8-10k for a new car coming from.. Financing?? Cash saved?? I mean if its cashed saved then make your monthly with that.. If your financing the 8-10k.. Look at how much your payments drop.. Is it that much.. Some places but the length of the loan in half to what a new car is.. I got 6 years on my FRS, where as my last car was used and was 4 years max.. The payment difference is 125$ difference which .... For me.. Was stop eating out every night.. Plus the money you get with the parts can supplement that difference for, in my case, almost 8-10 months..

With out knowing the whole situation it's hard to give the best advice.. Picking up a weekend job might help, or using your skill set on the side.. If your job allows it.. Working for Raytheon a military contract, I had to watch what I did on the side with my electronics tech experience.. But I could do whatever I wanted with my auto mechanic experience..

Letting your car go back is the absolute last option you want to choose.. I did that when I was 20 and this was the first real thing I was able to get on my own.. At 34.. My xterra I got on my own.. At 22% apr.. That's the last thing you want lol.. My 8k truck cost me 20k.. But it repaired my credit a lot.. And using high intrest credit cards, sparingly to help..

Oh as for the other car.. A miata I think is the closest to what we have here.. If a two seater won't work.. I'd love a 96 civic hatch

I was going to ask the same thing, but I figured the question was too personal. You're going to take a serious hit selling the car so quickly unless your area is sold out of FRS/BRZ.

I'm going to guess that you'll break even after you sell your FRS. If you have 8-10k cash to dump on another car, then why not dump that money on the FRS and refinance with a lower monthly payment?

On the other hand, if you're going to finance the 8-10k, I'd suggest just buying a beater car for 2k cash instead. Without getting into your personal finances, it's hard to give you a sound financial advise.

just for the situation to be more clear, i lost my job (no, not fired). it was a bit higher paying than pretty much most of what i can get around my county (and go to school simultaneously. that coupled w/ living expenses, tuition and insurance, makes the situation brutal. i was living paycheck to paycheck as is, so less income means i'll just get in debt every month.

seeing as how my current loan is a 6 year. if i got a 10k loan for say, 4 years. would my payments be only a difference of ~$100? if thats the case, i might just have to work overtime every week when i get my new job to maintain ownership of my car instead of getting a cheaper one.

worst case scenario of getting a miata isnt so bad, but snagging a RSX or Integra type s wouldnt be so bad either.

so question is, with going to school and getting a less paying job. my best bet would be to just work overtime? is the FRS worth having a 80+ hour work week? i guess thats a decision i'm gonna have to make

edit: also, my tax refund is looking like it'd be 3k+ and wouldnt i get my warranty money back? i was thinking if i spent 8-10k on a used car then i'd be 8k in debt instead of 20k in debt. thats my reasoning

Just based on the text in bold, you should be looking at a $1.5k Honda Civic. That's just what I'd do.

If you're still going with getting a 8-10k car, there are several car loan calculators online. They will tell you how much the monthly payments are.

Actually, if you currently don't have a job, I doubt any bank will give you a loan for 8-10k.

that suks... especially living paycheck to paycheck
if i was in ur shoes i would buy a cheap reliable car (camry/corolla/civic) till i finish school and can afford the things i want

use this to find out what ur payments will be
