Rumor via MT's Ed Loh: Subaru to turbocharged FA20 Engine

According to Motor Trend editor in chief Edward Loh, Subaru has confirmed that it'll be building a turbo version of the BRZ's FA20 engine.

But funny thing is Subaru hasn't confirmed yet that it'll be putting it into the BRZ.

Seeing how the BRZ is the only car using the FA20 engine for now though, is this a pretty sure sign that a turbocharged FA20 will be fit into future BRZ (maybe FR-S/86 too) models ???

This can go many ways, most likely of which is the WRX/STI for 2013. No turbo for BRZ. SOA has said that as well as the engineers.

the turbo engine will not find its way into the BRZ...its for other models

I believe they are building a turbo version of this engine, I highly doubt it is going in this car however.

a ton of articles have been quoted saying the FA is going to be their new starting platform for their cars including the new turbocharged varieties.

IF they build a turbo version of the FA20 engine, an engine that is used ONLY in the BRZ, why would they not eventually use it in the BRZ ?? They will. They do not want to say so at this time because if they did many may decide to wait for that instead of getting the NA FA20 BRZ.

I also feel that Toyota will not go that route. They are likely to go the SC route. It has been officially stated that Toyotal and Subaru are free to develop their individual versions of the cars in the future.

Exactly.

Of coarse they will put that turbo FA in the BRZ. Perhaps for the STI version.

they have been quoted saying the engine is too far back to put the turbo (which i call BS on because it goes under the motor who knows maybe there is a sub frame issue) also they said the typical TMIC wont fit under the hood.

Your logic is flawed, the FA20 is the first in Subaru's new engine family. It is silly to assume that just because the first version of this engine is going in to the BRZ, the turbo version is inevitably going to end up in it as well. Subaru happens to also manufacture a car called the WRX, and it is due for replacement. ;)

The bottom of the oil pan is level with the bottom flat of the sub frame... That is not to say they could not do it some other way.

the only thing i've noticed in the pictures that might be possible is a small battery and put the turbo there. or re locate the battery all together and put the turbo there. other than that we don't know what kind of space issues we have.

They've said no turbo at launch and that the FB wasn't ever designed to be turbo'd. Now they've given us a turbo FA16 display, and if they follow their earlier displacement bump for North American STI's, a turbo FA20 makes a bit of logic.

Whether a 300+ bhp turbo FA20 BRZ STI comes later is very speculative (FA16 turbo is more believable), though. Product placement, halo car, etc...

subatoy 12-05-2011 07:12 PM

They officialy said this engine would be in the Next gen WRX.
I highly doubt the BRZ will see an engine any time soon.
