Pioneer app radio
I am very interested in installing a Pioneer appradio unit in my car. Has anyone already installed one already?
Also if anyone could post links to what harness adapters I would need to swap that would be awsome. |
Out of curiosity, what interests you about the AppRadio?

Dashkit & Harness: @Beat-Sonic http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18102 Note* My friend, @brianlo622 just put in a 2-din Pioneer HU (albeit not the 'Appradio' standalone units), and also noted you will need longer screws for the beat-sonic dashkit, here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26567 Antenna Options: Seems like people are using the Metra 40-LX11 http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10112 To digress a bit, an 'appradio-only' HU, e.g., SPH-DA02 (with 1 set of RCA preouts) and SPH-DA100 (with 2 sets of RCA preouts) can potentially be limiting in terms of system expandability. If you're deadset on one of these HUs, I would suggest (at least) going with the SPH-DA100. You'd need to pick up the new CD-IH202 cable (avail. Spring 13) if you go iphone 5...but more on that below. My biggest caveat with the appradio-only HUs is that we can't be certain how much support Pioneer will offer going forward on these 'appradio' standalone units, especially considering there hasn't been any update/refresh to this particular product line after 2013 CES. In my opinion, the concept of the standalone 'appradio' HU is fantastic, but it's been (unfortunately) poorly executed. That being said, I personally have the AVH-P8400BH with 2nd USB port, lots of the bells/whistles/etc, and I love the HU. I don't think I would be willing to lose all the other functions if I opted for 'appradio' only, but to each his own, right? In the meantime, we can hope that Pioneer continues to make strides in 'appradio' development, as I see this becoming the future with the lack need of physical media, i.e. CDs, etc. - other than for audiophiles and SQ users. Just before the 2013 CES, Pioneer announced some new HUs and it looks like Pioneer has pretty much added the 'appradio' functionality (a la 'appradio mode') across their 2103 lineup of GPS and DVD-based HUs. So, while I understand you don't necessarily need CD functionality, it may be worth considering...as you can always find a good deal online for a 2013 HU or even a 2012 HU with advanced app mode/appradio mode. It sounds like you're an iPhone user, so here's where it gets a bit tricky - as lots of people have been complaining about iphone4/4s/5 compatibility with their older decks using appradio mode, which cable(s) to use, which iOS version compatible, etc. I would suggest you start off by taking a look at the compitiblity chart of which iPhone/iOS you're currently running (keep in mind this chart was pre-CES/2013): http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/St...ilitychart.pdf For everyone else with a different pioneer HU (other than what OP has inquired on)..."In general", if you're staying on iPhone 4/4s...you'd likely only need one of these: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...bles/CD-IU201S Assuming OP is still deadset on that HU, like ~perhaps the SPH-DA100 HU, i believe the headunit comes with iPhone cable for use with 4/4s??, but if you upgrade to the iPhone 5 (like many have done already), you're going to be asking what to do now, where's some compatible cables?!? Since the 2013 CES, Pioneer has also recently announced compatible cables for iPhone 5 - to release in the Spring, so you can transmit video (read: iPod video, App-mirroring,etc.) over VGA (2012/2013 HUs) or HDMI (Top of line 2013 DVD;Navi; SPH-DA100 HUs). Announcement: http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/p...ectivity-kits/ HDMI Cable: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ables/CD-IH202 VGA Cable: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...les/CD-IV202AV VGA Cable for AVIC-x850bt http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...s/CD-IV202NAVI Note* Should you make the switch to iPhone5, you will also need the Apple Lightning to VGA or Lightning to Digital AV, and Lightning to USB, along with the corresponding Pioneer cable as above. Lightning to USB http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD...cable?fnode=45 Lightning Digital AV Adapter http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD...apter?fnode=45 Lightning to VGA Adapter http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD...apter?fnode=45 *Disclaimer - I did my best to pull the info together quickly, so please also reach out to the other forum members here, as I'm sure they are far more versed on the technical aspects. |

^No worries...anytime I see a post about appradio, I know the conversation is eventually going to lead to compatibility inquiries. I thought it best to try and expand on that point so more ppl can benefit.

Just installed for iphone5. You can use the old iPhone cable, get an HDMI, iPhone digital AV and Lightning to USB, update the software and your ready to go. It's a bumpy road, the idea is good, execution is shaky at best. Be ready to have patience.

Sucks to be in with the new tech sometimes. Looks like it's slim pickings for iPhone 5 users right now without other modifications/accessories.

Just picked up the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS. For the time being i'll be connecting my old non-active iPhone 4 (tethered to my iPhone 5 for data) or my iPad 3 (w/ current dataplan) to the headunit.
This way i can get my navi/apps on the head unit display. Once the CD-IV202AV cable is released I'll switch over to solely using my iPhone 5. I should have all the cables/harnesses i need by tomorrow. hope to post a video review once it's completed. |
