Sit in the rear seat for me ;) (with photos of people in back seat)

Just wanted a picture, or thoughts, on the rear seat space in this car.

I KNOW it is a small car. I understand that. Its just... if I get this car, it will have to afford some practicality to justify it being my only car. If there is literally no way for someone of average height to sit in the rear seats, I'll have to continue dreaming and start looking at other cars.

Thanks!

Updated with pic of four people in the car, and adults in the back seat.

I can't wait to see some pics of some 6ft guy fetal-positioning himself in the rear seats.

I don't know, I get a kick out of it for some reason. Like watching people struggle to get out of Lotuses. It's just hilarious.

I've honestly never sat in a coupe and been comfortable in the rear seat (I'm 6').

I have friends with Mustang GT, Scion tC, E46 3 series, and Civic Si, and have ridden in the back seat of all of them. They were all very cramped and I bumped my head on the rear glass. The Mustang especially was incredibly uncomfortable, 3 series was by far the nicest but still not something I'd want to spend a lot of time in. I also sat in the back seat of a GC at an auto show and had my friend sit in front and there was no way I could have ridden in it like that. Why would the ft86, which is smaller than all of them, be any different? After those experiences I would never want anyone I considered a friend to ride in the back seat of this car, unless it was a very short trip. I don't think there is a coupe on the planet that will fit 4 6-footers comfortably.

Im 5'10 and i felt a bit uncomforatable in the rear seats of the Scion tC. Not enough head room and the dumb ass driver(a friend of a friend) kept trying to take every corner or turn hard as fuhh so i kept ramming my head against the rear pillar. I Disliked the space and view of that interior, but hopefully for the money we're paying we get a step up from the tC.

The FR-S will be significantly smaller than the tC.

DIMENSION: FR-S tC
LENGTH: 166.7 in. 174.0 in.
WIDTH: 69.9 in. 70.7 in.
HEIGHT: 51.2 in. 55.7 in.
WHEELBASE: 101.2 in. 106.3 in.

As an aside, I thought the current tC back seats were pretty awesome for a small coupe. Getting in and out stinks, but once you are in there, it isn't too bad. I don't expect to put people in the back of the FR-S other than having absolutely no other choice.

Neutral_Eyes 12-04-2011 02:00 AM

They're just for gallons of milk or small children. But that's what the trunk's for, too.

TOMIMOTO 12-04-2011 02:14 AM

My brother has a Genesis Coupe. I'm 5'6" and I'm cramped and hit my head on the glass in the back. The 86 is much smaller than the Genesis, so I would assume it's not going to be fun back there.

Kids Heart 12-04-2011 02:31 AM

I've fit 5 people in a crx. Just saying.

I would appreciate a picture of a person in the back seat though.

Kazama 12-04-2011 05:02 AM

i think its safe to say that it want be a good space, if it was it woud have been one single picture on the hole web whit someone in the back. we have all this pictures but nobody thought about getting in the back? there is a reason toyota dont want pictures of the backseat. AND THATS BECAUSE ITS USELESS!

st162celica 12-04-2011 06:17 AM

As long as a baby seat and toddler seat fit in the back I'm happy for when I need it. That's why I never bought a mr2 or even a jz80 supra. Well the supra has back seats for people with no legs !

Majority of the time will be me by myself in the car late at night going sideways every chance I get.

BANGER 12-04-2011 07:02 AM

Even if they're useless, I appreciate them because I can just throw stuff back there and reach for it whenever I need it. And since the car is so small, should be fairly reachable.
Versus let's say an S2000 where it either goes in the trunk or on the passenger seat.

Plus, in the worst case scenario you *have* to carry some passengers, you still can, which is a big difference instead of telling said person that he's SOL.

KAuss 12-04-2011 07:18 AM

I wish. I'm lucky enough that I can set aside enough money for the 86. Let alone chew through tyres that I can't afford at the track. There will still be days at the track, but not as many as I would like ,:burnrubber:

KAuss 12-04-2011 07:40 AM

I'm right there with you bro lol... Only way I don't have a worry is if we don't get a loan for a house... If I do, I won't be buying anything for a while...

My track is my 10 min drive to work lol...

My track day is a 50 min drive each way !

I got a $550k mortgage man... It sucks I'm broke, but I'm borrowing more to get the 86. I've had my celica for the last 12 years @ 430,000kms . I deserve it, after all the things I have had to put up with the st162.

Nothing is stopping me from getting this car. But keeping it is another story. Hoping the leasing company doesn't take it off me !

Not to sound mean(but I know it is going to sound mean), unless you guys have kids, why is everyone so concerned with the backseat? You are going to be driving the vehicle, correct?

Thats not sounding mean at all, its a good question. I am a 22 year old guy that is looking for my 2nd (but first new) car purchase. I want to get something that will offer me a little bit of utility, as it will be my only car, and I will need to be able to handle whatever life throws at me in it for the next 5-7 years of my life.

Just trying to cover my bases. I don't want to get a car that I will regret.

Not to sound mean, but if you don't care about the backseat, why don't you already own a Miata?

koyv90 12-04-2011 10:27 PM

Recommendation: Sit slouched!!

I've sat in a TC and i was fine im 5'8 though so.

There are alot of reasons not to own a miata and be interesed in the FRS/BRZ. Backseats may not even be a factor.

Sport-Tech 12-05-2011 02:02 AM

Priceless. Thanks for sharing.

Some folks (including myself) just don't want the highway noise (top up or down) and car security issues attendant with owning a convertible. Especially in climes where verts are only good for top-down running about 3 months a year (high summer needs AC, winter....).

pr0j 12-05-2011 07:21 AM

i need to be able to fit my drumkit in it which is no problem except for the bass drum. i'm gonna take it down to the dealership and if it fits in the passanger seat i'll buy the car then and there :)

I'm sorry, but that question doesn't make much sense. Just because I don't care about the back seat doesn't mean I should have a Miata. And I already said I'm not trying to be mean, so the testy retort wasn't necessary.

I truly hope you intended this as humour (if so,.) You do realize that no one bigger than an average 8 year old girl will fit back there with an average height (5'9"+) driver?

Whoah! You make it sound as though suggesting you should drive a Miata is mean somehow.

The Miata is the car on the market right now which is closest in spirit and size to the FT-86 trio, so it isn't at all a stretch to say that if you are searching for that kind of driving feel and performance, you might like (and therefore own) a Miata.

Don't think anyone was questioning your manhood or anything like that

No malice intended towards the Miata at all. I was just debunking that asssumption. As for me, I have no interest in a Miata. Just personal preference, I guess.

SHINCHU86 12-05-2011 11:25 AM

im 5'11.5" and if i cant fit my twin 3 year old kids in their toddler seats (boosters soon)... i am SOL and cant get this car.

im going to bring a seat with me to the test drive when they hit dealers.
thats going to be the true test.

they (BARELY) fit in my 98 camaro at the moment.

if they cant sit in the back of the FR-S, i will be forced to buy a honda fit for daily, and a good old AE86 for track duty.
not a bad comprimise, i suppose. :iono:

HyperTech 12-05-2011 12:45 PM

the back seat will be a permanent extension of my trunk, so nobody gonna seat on the back seat.

Kind of! The centre console actually extends to in-between the back seats, to the point that I think it would be easier to get to the cup holders from the back seats.

I'm 5'8 and have sat in the back seat (sorry, no images) the passenger seat had been moved forward a bit (still plenty of room for passenger), but it was more spacious than I was expecting.
