Anybody considered using 16" wheels for the track?

This car is pretty small and light. Wouldn't 16" wheels be more appropriate for the track? Reduced unsprung weight and cheaper tires. What do you guys think?

Yes. Check the determining proper tire width thread. I would link it but that's too annoying on the iPad :)

It depends how much brake you need.

baldolera 12-04-2011 12:24 AM

I'm thinking the FR-S Wouldn't need too big of a brake because of it's weight and speed.

Dave-ROR 12-04-2011 12:32 AM

Stock brakes with pads and good fluid will be fine for either. The brakes were designed to stop cars with more power and 500-800lbs more weight.

That would really narrow your wheel and tire selection, no?

Yes. To r comps for the wider replacements but he said track use so I figured that's what he wanted anyways. That's for 245/45/16 anyways there are street tires in 225/50/16 but that's a pointless swap.

Neutral_Eyes 12-04-2011 01:02 AM

I'm assuming 16x8, what would be the ideal wheel?

8" width is Hoosiers rec for the 245/45/16 tire. Wheel... No idea I don't know what's made in 16x8 5x100. I've been looking or 17x8.5s for 235/40/17s. Only food a few there plenty of 17x8 though.

Why do you say that? Anything will be better than the stock tires grip wise. And 225/50/16's are a good size with lots of good tires to choose from.

yera 12-04-2011 09:22 AM

YES!

225/50/16 ...Advan neova AD08, yokohama S.Drive, Falken Azenis 615k, FK452, Toyo R1R, Toyo R888, Hankook R-S3, etc

Do the math. It'll increase diameter unfavorably enough. If you want street tires 235/40/17s will lower the diameter and therefore shorten the gearing. Since the op is talking track use I made the assumption that he cared more about performance impacts over street tire availability. There's a chart in the tire width thread showing these sizes (with diameter changes) and prices of good tires that I threw together last week.

Combine the worse gearing with the additional sidewall flex and the only slight bump in width.. I see it as pointless. Unless you are trying to save money, tires will be about ~30 (or 50 for re11s) cheaper per tire for the good street tires versas 235/40/17s. Sadly RS-3s are not sold in 235/40/17 but I plan on contacting them to see if they'd consider the size. Compared to stock tire pricing is 1-23 bucks per tire cheaper.

Here's the chart so you don't have to reference the other thread:

i can all but guarantee you that a 16x9 would be faster.

Thanks for the chart. I didn't see this in the other thread and was putting together something like this myself.

By the way, I was thinking of getting a set of extra wheels in 16" size just for track and put 245/45-16 on them. For street I'll probably keep the 17".
