Muffler Delete - Run Rich?

I was doing a little second/third gear pull today and my buddy who was behind me said I was pouring black smoke. I also noticed my car was popping and "backfiring" a lot upon downshifts and letting off.

All I have done is the Berk Technology single tip track pipe(muffler delete). Theres no way this would cause my car to run rich, right? Any other suggestions? I just got an oil change today, if that matters.

Thanks!

I'm gonna say no. There's nothing behind the muffler that ties into the ECU.

I'd have to agree with you.. Logic to me says it would lean it out a bit, since it flows better and moves more air

Have you noticed a drop in fuel mileage

What would it mean if you noticed a drop in mpg. Isn't that normal when you do something to the exhaust or remove your muffler?

If he started running rich then it should put a dent in fuel mileage, pouring black smoke just seems to run extremely rich and fuel mileage would be cut noticeably.. Now if fuel mileage jumped up, then I wouldn't worry about it, I've gained ~2ish mpg, with my injen intake and evo 3 exhaust

In some cases you do lose fuel mileage, some is because it flows more air and therefore uses more fuel, some is because like me, when I got my intake, and then later my exhaust I loved getting on it to hear the sounds... But you can gain mpg's by the engine isn't working as hard to pull air in and push it out making it more efficient.. And engine is after all a giant air pump lol..

Is that why some people would get a tune?

Well the electronics of the car can compensate for the intake and exhuast and things like that to be able to run safely.. Just as running from Death Valley to Denver.. The computer will make the right fuel adjustments.. But if you get a tune for your car, with your performance parts.. It will run much much better.. The exact (for the most part) fueling your engine needs.. That's why every engine will always run different.. Even two stock engines can run a couple horsepower difference.. And altitude can be a factor also.. That's why it's always best to dyno and tune as close to your region as possible..

Not a chance. Has nothing to do with the muffler delete. Did you take a cat out of the system also?

'Course - the car does run pig rich at WOT past about 5kRPM, but most of it gets fired off by the cats.

I notice the backfire type sounds when I lift off after hard acceleration with my custom delete. It's just things normally cause by the muffler. And I love it. Sounds so good like that, at least to me.

I have noticed some carbon build up on the tip too but the car does rich from the factory from what the tuners have said.

I have notice no change in fuel economy, other than my willingness to drive hard just to hear the sound. So much nicer than any catback I've heard :)

Damn. Well thanks for the info. I always learn something new on this forum. :)
