Subject: Formal announcement of the re-opening of the Thompson Speedway road course

All,

With a lot of hard work and support from the motorsport enthusiast community and the tireless efforts of our entire staff, I am thrilled to formally announce that we will once again be hosting road racing events at Thompson Speedway.

First, I would like to thank everyone for their support and patience over these last couple years as we developed final plans to bring back to life the historic road course here at Thompson Speedway. It has been an exciting endeavor and a pleasure to have been able to meet with each of the different groups that are involved in the road racing community. Now, because of these efforts, all the elements for the project have fallen in place.

As soon as conditions allow, we will begin construction in the spring of 2013. We will work throughout the 2013 NASCAR racing season with a final build out set for mid-fall 2013. I must point out that during this time, every effort will be made to minimize disruptions to our NASCAR events and to our customers at the Speedway golf course. Both of these operations will continue to be a part of our sports complex and we look forward to maintaining a high level of commitment to these activities going forward.

With this being said we project to have a full 2014 road racing season. To help everyone plan for our opening and your racing activities, we will begin reserving club rental dates in February 2013 for the 2014 season. You will be notified of the process on reserving these dates soon.

To assist with our communications to the entire motorsports community, we will shortly have a new motorsports park website and blog up and running. This will help keep everyone up to date in real time on the progress of the project throughout the season.

This is an exciting time for everyone at the Thompson Speedway organization and for all of those involved in helping to make our dream of racing again at the oldest road racing facility in the country a reality.

Thank you again for all of your support and have a happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

NASA Northeast previously had a late-2013 date reserved however when I check now the event has been removed.

The track also has an interesting history and I'm really hoping they can pull it off.

Here's a satellite picture of the current layout, you can see the remnants of the old course and it looks like they'll be sticking close to the previous layout:

Had a dream about this track last night so I tried to dig up any info on the progress of the road course. Here's what I found.

NEW ERA ON TAP AT THOMPSON - Feb 1, 2013

...Right on the heels of the Zuidema appointment, Jonathan Hoenig, Director of Business Development and Marketing confirmed the long-running rumor that the Thompson road course track would return to life in the 2014 season. The road course had been an integral part of the Thompson facility for many years and has recently been used for various car club meets, testing and other such events. The plans call for rebuilding the current course and incorporating many new ideas along with an upgrade of many of the track’s facilities. Construction of the 1.7 mile road course will begin this spring and will be done in a manner that will still allow for weekly racing on the historic 5/8ths mile oval. Once completed, the road course will be used primarily for car club rentals.

I go to Thompson every week working on a car for the NASCAR events. They originally weren't going to start construction until November but the construction company's calandar opened up and they have been working for a couple of months. The NASCAR schedule is over except for one more race in the middle of October so now they don't have to worry about putting on their weekly shows. They've made a ton of progress and hopefully will be done ahead of schedule. They talked about opening the oval sometime in July but there is a chance it'll be ready for their normal early April opening. :happy0180:

Is there any place to park and get a good view of the construction? Even if it's from the street, I'd be okay with that. I just don't wanna drive down only to find a tall construction fence and not be able to see anything haha

Going to be so nice to drive to this for autocross and track days instead of the current venues.

You should be able to drive up to the fence the way the pits are now and get a pretty good view. They have a driving school there this weekend so you might even be able to walk around the track.

I was at the track all weekend and they have almost all of the new pavement down. It looks amazing. The buildings going up in the infield are progressing nicely too. Here is a short video of my driving on the part of the track that goes through what used to be the parking lot

how... can i get in on this?!

afohlin 10-24-2013 10:21 AM

There is a massive swap meet at the track next weekend (Nov 2nd and 3rd) and you can at least drive on the part of the track in the parking lot. The whole track is open and you can walk around and check everything out
