Very few people buy carbon because of weight...it's all about appearances.

LMFAO !

I'm tracking mine and considering one for the vents alone (texas heat) if their was a fiberglass one I'd buy that,..but sinse there isn't Seibon is the only option right now.

I know this thread 's been down for a week, but OP - would you mind taking a picture of the underside of the hood? I'd like to know how the skeleton compares to the stock piece. Is it identical? I've never had a CF hood, does it feel flimsy compared to the stock piece?

Mine is vented but you can see here how it's molded. It's just as flimsy as the stock hood to be honest, you know when you put the hood up on the support and it flexes, thats what this hood does too.

Thanks a ton! I'm considering the Seibon TA, with the vents and the scoop, so this was actually a bigger help than the OEM style. Also, thanks for your opinion on it flexing- I wasn't sure what to expect.

No, they buy it so they can say to their buddies, "Hey, come pick up my bike, you won't believe how light it is. It's carbon fiber!"

So it's really all about the weight. :D

Also, carbon rides really nice and smooths out vibrations that metals transmit to your ass so a lot of older riders really like them as it reduces fatigue somewhat. :)

The biggest thing I worry about with a carbon hood is whether it's designed to buckle properly in the case of an accident. The last thing I want is a big sheet of reinforced carbon/glass shearing off of it's bolts and coming through the windshield in in accident.

I was under the impression that carbon fiber was really brittle, so wouldn't it crack before it became a projectile?

SubieNate 01-11-2013 08:13 PM

I've personally watched carbon fiber spars for aircraft bend a good 60 degrees before they snapped, so brittle is a relative term. It's all about how it's put together. When laminated properly it can be a pretty resilient material. Once it's limits are reached it does tend to shatter into a bajillion little pieces (Don't breath this) but those limits tend to be relatively high. It has much more capability for elastic deformation than most metals and much less capability for plastic deformation. Basically, it bends and bends and bends and then SNAP it's done. Whereas something made from metal bends and bends then deforms permanently and then depending on the material keeps bending permanently until it can't bend anymore (in half in most cases) and then maybe breaks.

One thing carbon is never very good at is holding small fasteners such as those that hold the hinges to the hood.

I hope I'm not being a pest, but was still wondering if you could take this pic...
